    stags progress

    Hi everyone one ,

Just an update on my stag,

First of all i would like to thank julian, for taking time out in coming down again to help me out , also james coming down again , and sam for suppying the radiator.

So thursday night i stripped most of the car ready for julians arrival , when then proceeded to do the jobs i was not sure about , then julian went home to get his stag ready for today and james arrived at 2 pm and we then got the old chains off and managed to fit the new ones on and put the cover back on complete with alternator.

The timing will be done as soon as the new hoses have arrived , so julian i took your advice on new hoses , may as well as they are off the car.

So jobs to do now are fit new cork gaskets to the rocker covers and refit, refit viscous fan, underseal the crossmember where the rad fits on to, fit rad , airfilter box , then fit new hoses when they arrive, complete with new antifreeze, and top up the power steering fluid as i was a numpty and left the pump on its side and did not check if the lid was shut , ooops ..

So one question what is the best antifreeze to get .

    regards paul

If you've not got residual antifreeze of another type in the system, then the one I found with the most approvals, certificates, heritage etc., etc., for classic cars was Glysantin G48. In UK it's marketed by Comma.

Glysantin have been doing this job for 85 years!
    The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

      Hi Paul,

That's good news and I was glad to help - just sorry I didn't get the chance to meet James.

One other word of advice, if you're changing the cam cover gaskets (sensible) then you should change the half moons as well - they're the four semi circular rubber pieces at each end of the heads. Oh, and don't forget to get those block drain plugs out and have a good poke around before you replace the antifreeze.

As for 'best' antifreeze, the critical thing is not to mix the more modern OAT type antifreeze with the traditional IAT type. It can be difficult to tell what you had in there but the OAT is often orange or red. IAT tends to be blue, green or yellow. If you give it a very, very thorough clean through you can change the type (I've stuck to IAT but some on here speak well of the OAT which should last longer). As for what type then, I'd just recommend using a reputable brand. I've always stuck to Unipart but I do find it hard to get hold of sometimes.

Good luck for the start up

      Cheers

      Julian
