    Hi everyone,

Has anyone any ideas why a rev counter should randomly stop working .

    regards Paul.

My rev counter needs a quick tap to get it going - bit like me in the morning. I suspect this is a slightly knackered head unit. Intermittent running sounds like a dodgy connexion, but if it resumes operations after a tap I'd think it's the head unit.

        Hi Matt and terry,

Yeah mine had to have a tap to get it to work and now after tapping it nothing is happening , it does have electronic ignition as well.

Seems like a common thing. I have to whack mine on top of the dash above the rev counter to get it to work.

The mk2 rev counter will not work with mk1 wiring. It is fairly easy to alter the wiring. This subject of failing mk1 rev counters and electronic ignition has been covered before, do a quick search. Here is one thread with a few useful links.

Yes. Those two connections on the Mk2 tach are
                  1. 12v power (green wire)
                  2. signal from the coil NEG (you will need to add this on a Mk1. Then join the two white wire 'bullet' connections together (or your engine will not run).

Sorry I cant answer the question, but another vote for the tap. About 1/10 start ups it doesn't work and a tap on the glass bursts it into life!

Mine works from cold, but then goes off. Tapping makes no difference in this case. It also goes off if I turn the lights on!

It was suggested that a bad earth is the cause, it's on my list but it is a long lisssssst.....

                      Regards

I would also say an earth problem from what you have said.

Steve, the earth is just a small push on connector, and takes a couple of minutes to sort out; give it a squeeze with a pair of pliers. Shame on you!
