My rev counter needs a quick tap to get it going - bit like me in the morning. I suspect this is a slightly knackered head unit. Intermittent running sounds like a dodgy connexion, but if it resumes operations after a tap I'd think it's the head unit.

Yeah mine had to have a tap to get it to work and now after tapping it nothing is happening , it does have electronic ignition as well.
Hi guys I need a bit of help I have a mk1 stag the rev counter never reads correct so I got hold of a rev counter from what I think is a mk2 the mk1 has an earth on the case and three other terminals but this other unit has an earth on the case but only two terminals can I fit this to my car without to muchrewiring thanks

The mk2 rev counter will not work with mk1 wiring. It is fairly easy to alter the wiring. This subject of failing mk1 rev counters and electronic ignition has been covered before, do a quick search. Here is one thread with a few useful links.

Yes. Those two connections on the Mk2 tach are
1. 12v power (green wire)
2. signal from the coil NEG (you will need to add this on a Mk1. Then join the two white wire 'bullet' connections together (or your engine will not run).
