    SD1 Propshaft fitted - Result!

Bought one of the CV type prop's from Rimmer's a couple of months back and finally got the time to fit it today - what a difference!
No out of balance rumbles past 60,70.... a very worthwhile change.
On the basis they were designed for and fitted to the SD1 it should see me out and none of the rubber sleeve perishing problem of the Stag shaft.
I thought I might have had a quill shaft bearing problem originally but it is fine - Also, the mild leak on the overdrive rear seal seems to have died down to the point it is just not worth disturbing to fit a replacement.
One thing I did have a brainwave over was how to test the fluid level in the gearbox - I used a black Allen Key; put the short end though the filler hole and turned it so that the short part of the key is pointing down into the fluid. works a treat and showed that my box has actually not used any oil to speak of even with the end seal leak for at least 2,000 miles now.Maybe it was a little over full when I re-built it....

A successful and beautifully sunny day

Even more pleasing Andrew I bought it on one of the 15% off deals (about £70.00) so an excellent new prop for rather less than a re-con Stag one.
I'd originally tried getting an LD new one made from the same type of rubber lined tubing but Peter was having trouble getting the tube to have them made.

I fitted an actual SD1 shaft when I converted my Stag to manual a few years ago, I happened to have one left over from my V8 Toledo project. I had to redrill the gearbox flange to suit, but they do work very well.

Ah....so its not a straight swop. You need to drill holes ?

            Hi Mike,

Is the SD prop a straight swop or do you have to drill the flange as Neil did. Also is it the standard SD1prop you used?

I bought a CVJ propshaft from Rimmers and one end had 2 sets of holes, put them at the gearbox end.

Presumably this was then an SD shaft.

Havent tried it yet but it must be better than the old one with 2 sticky uj s.

                  Hi Tony,

It's exactly as Richard says here, the Rimmers ones are pre drilled with the extra holes needed - dead easy to fit and has made my car a pleasure again over 50 which before was smitten by bad vibes from what must have been the broken down prop rubber lining and hence out of balance.
It is a waste getting an old prop balanced again as it just won't stay in balance for long.

                  Cheers
                  Mike

                    Thanks mike,
as I said in my reply to Richard I will look into one of these as I to have a slight vibration.

Seems a cost effective and simple upgrade to a common problem, what's the catch ?

Is it part no. PKC1993 and would it fit the TV8 with either manual and BW35, as quoted for the SD1 ?

I am pretty sure this is the one, but they only come with 4 holes rather than 8 holes at the gearbox end.

IIRC I drilled the gearbox flange as it was simpler to remove than the quill shaft, I needed it off to position the holes, and it turns out the steel for the propshaft flange is seriously hard metal!

The SD1 propshaft is a clearance bargain at Rimmers at the moment, £60 rather than £160.

                        £25 per hole drilled!

                          Many thanks for that update

At that price I'm really keen to give one a try but not clear whether they'll fit the BW35 as well as the manual box (assume both need drilling regardless)

The SD1 listing fits & auto & manual on that vehicle but puzzled as the Stag has different standard props for each

                          Cheers

I'm pretty sure that the BW35 uses a spline joint at the gearbox end rather than a flange. BW65 has a flange but the propshaft could be a different length.

                            Cheers,

You did well to get one of the pre drilled props at £70, they are now £136 and that is with 15% off at the mo, they should be £160!!!
