Last year I bought a chromed alternator from the Stonleigh Restoration show only to find it was of Chinese origin and it failed after 6 months summer use. Being a prat and liking the blinged up look I bought another chromed alternator from a supplier I had dealt with before and who was selling "Genuine Lucas High Output" alternators. The new alternator failed after just two weeks use, only outputting 11.5 to 12 volts at all revs.
Ive now removed it and on close inspection Ive come to the conclusion that internally and externally its identical to the Chinese one, even the numbers on the front casting are the same. Ive spoken to Lucas UK today and they state that they do not supply chromed alternators, theirs would have an id sticker on it and would have been packaged in a Lucas box, the chromed one I bought has no sticker and arrived in a plain box.
Ive spoken to the supplier who was initially stand offish but when I mentioned the info I got from Lucas he stated he bought his from Canada and had them chromed. Im going to return the unit and ask for my money back as I do not believe the alternators are Lucas units, hes offering an exchange unit once hes tested mine which the AA have already done and declared it U/S, he also stated that 12v was normal output for an alternator so Im thinking its gonna be a battle again :-(
One ruined weekend away with the Stag all because of dodgy parts, starting to wonder if Stag ownership is really worth the hassle :-(
