    Tubular manifolds query

Admired my new shiny tubularmanifoldspurchasedon National day, put a straight edge on the plate that bolts to head, on the RH manifold the face was pretty flat but on the LHit sort of bows - the centre is proud of the ends. If I put the straight edge on one of the end ports its proud of the other end by around 4-6mm.

It comes with gaskets but even so the manifold bolts will have to pull it into shape. Is this normal or should they go back to supplier?

the original cast mainfolds are slightly bowed ,and the pressure of the bolts makes the sael with the 'flat' face of the heads.

personally i would want both sides to be of the same tolerance, and should be more or less as flat as the originals, to tighten them down flat may require such torque that a thread gets pulled.

Cheers mad cyclist, I was going to have a word with them today, they'll be ok on replacing but sending means more money. Just wondered if the bow was normal and I should just fit.

        Hi Paul

Didn't know you bought those! are they the older pattern or the new ones? The new ones have a continuous plate joining the outlets together. Also be carefulwith the newer ones as they can foul the steering column shaft, they slightly rub on mine and I will compress the pipe slightly if I take it out again, it would probably clear if I left out the gaskets. The clearance on mine is 20thou - a bit too close. You will have to fit the new ones to the head first as you will not be able to get at the bolts otherwise. On the ones you have, I would send them back.

Hi Bob, that was why my wallet had shrank when looking at radiators......!

Sounds like its the new type (is that what you have?). I had heard about fouling the steering shaft and best not to fit gaskets but use goo, thats why I was concerned about the warping and amount I'd need.

Bit disappointed to hear best to fit to head first, I was hoping it would make it easier to fit with more clearance than less, the number of times I hoik the engine out.

I'll have a chat with suppliers - I know they'll replace. Just didn't want to waste postage money if this was normal - I guess its not.

          Cheers

The supplier said they often have a slight bend and they always fit gaskets and lots of goo! However sounds like mine might be a bad one. I was hoping to get away without gaskets to increase clearance. That said they're happy to swap and would prefer if unused, so I guess its a trip Cambridge way sometime....
