Stiff knob

For weeks on and off I have been having a stubborn choke knob and thinking it was the cable was surprised to start it up today and see the cable came out of the offside carb choke lever.

I can turn the lever by hand easily and all is oiled but when you pull it in the same direction line as the choke cable would, it bites badly and no wonder I have been having a stiff knob. I cant see any way I change the angle of the pull. I have the cable running under the carb over flow pipe. I can't see why it bites and on what

I had this I just ran it over the top of the pipe swiveled the bracket up a bit,seems to be OK now

Hi Andrew

Have you looked at where the two cables join at the back of the choke, I have seen this on a car I was working on where one of the cables had started to fray where they join, and was making
the choke hard to pull.

Thanks Steve, but without the cable attached, the carb lever is the problem and is catching, thus the cable cant pull it at the normal angle. I have don't as Graham has suggested moving the bracket up and putting the cable over the fuel overflow pipe and its as smooth as silk now. Still doesn't explain why the lever catches, but it works for now

gasket in between choke and carb body

I always give the accelerator a push while pulling the choke on, makes it a lot easier to move the choke knob. In my case, I think it is a rough surface on the fast idle cam that causes this. Opening the throttle a bit moves the relative parts apart, and thus reduces the friction significantly.

What is that above the radiator and attached to the top of the air intake duct?

Nice engine bay, by the way. Clean and well looked after but with no surplus bling.

Peter, if it is the shiny part you are referring to it is the air intake duct, part No. 217382, attached to the air cleaner box by a rubber gaiter. My one is of stainless steel(hence the shine) and was made up by a cousin of mine who is a vintage car restorer.
