    Electronic Ignition - Petronix Ignitor

I have just purchased an Ignitor (part number LU-187) for my Stag Mk II 1977 and I am having difficulty in fitting the unit to the distributor plate of the car. The screws supplied with the unit are too small to engage in the distributor plate properly, and if I try to use the screws that originally secured the points, they will not fit through the holes in the Ignitor base plate. Obviously I am reluctant to drill larger holes in the Ignitor base plate as this is strongly discouraged in the installation instructions and may jeopardise the warranty etc in case they have supplied incorrect parts etc. I have emailed Retrorockets who supplied the unit and am awaiting a reply. I was wondering if any other members had had this problem ?

One final question, I was wondering why arewere two base plates supplied with the Ignitor unit - one with the Ignitor unit on and the other just 'plain' ?

    Many thanks !

    Hi AndyPandy,

I have started documenting the Ignitor installation that I did recently. It isn't complete yet though. The main point to note is that compared to the pics on the web page below, the magnetic collar needs to be pushed all the way down.

The reason there is two base plates is that the one without the ignitor attached to it is a spacer and sits below the other one. You will see that it doesn't have a threaded hole for the earth wire.

One thing I found was the timing was way out when I installed it, so be prepared to check/adjust the timing after you have installed it.

I have posted a pic of my installation on the reply to your other post.

If you have any problems post them here and i will see if I can help.

    Regards

    Dave

When I installed my Ignitor, the screws were fine although only just long enough i suppose. Do you have it sitting flat o the base plate?

        Hi Brian,

It's not the length of the screws that is the problem, it's the diameter - hence the possible need to drill slightly wider holes.

Many thanks anyway - much appreciated.

Thanks Dave - your help is much appreciated. Guess I'll have to drill wider holes.....

Mine fitted fine, I would be inclined to send it back and get a replacement if yours isn't right. If you drill it and it doesn't work you will have thrown away £60.

              Andypandy,

Over the years, and after many points changes, it's very easy to strip the threads in the base plate. So a previous owner has done what I have done on one occasion and used fatter screws in order to get a purchase. I may even have resorted to self-tappers one time - shame on me!

So the chances are that your Ignitor has the correct screws and the holes are the correct diameter, and these are the size Lucas determined when they designed the distributor base plate, not the size you are stuck with now after Bodgit & Co have relieved it of some of its design criteria

I would imagine the simplest remedywould beto widen the holes in the Ignitor plate but if you don't want to, then I suspect you will have to get a new base plate.

Thanks Ray - much appreciated. I have only had the Stag for a couple of months and decided to fit the Ignitor to save time (+ money !) in not fitting two sets of points etc. Any ideas on where I could get a new (or used) baseplate ? Rimmer say it is NSS.

                Thanks again.

                  AndyPandy,

You may have to source one as a second-hand item. I'm sure Martin at

                  http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Justriumph-...QQftidZ2QQtZkm

could lay his hand on one for you - though you may have to buy a complete distributor! If he has one in stock, I'm sure he will know if the base plate threads are original or oversize.
