Not done this but did put LED bulbs in brake/ rear lights. Did not think any improvement so removed them. The way to go is to put chrome tape around the interior bowl of rear light unit.( Just plucking up the courage in my case to disturb lens etc for fear of breaking off location tabs!)
make sure your earths are good I would suggest. you cannot have enough earth connections
Also the bulb holders can become less effective, rather than new replacements I found I could take the original items apart. the forks and the bayonet holder are two seperate parts that are held together by the plastic cover. carefully lever the plastic back and you should be able to get the fork bit off, clean up the surfaces and add a little electrical cleaner and then reassemble. I was quite impressed with the difference if I may be so bold.
Also if your car is mid'ish 73 or earlier you may have the dreaded nighttime dimming relay. it is a yellow box of joy fitted over the nearside inner wheel arch. access it via the boot. remove, splice the same coloured wires together and you should have brighter brake lights when the headlights are on also.
