Are you sure the wire doesn't go to the solenoid

      Hi Malc,

The solenoid has both wires attached. Ignition on, third or fourth selected - no click from solenoid. The problem is either the solenoid or the inhibitor switch. And the fact I have a loose wire on the near side in the general area, leads me to believe that it's the inhibitor switch. I just can't get to the bl**dy thing!

      Any tips/hints gratefully accepted!

      Thanks,

      Jon

I've been down this road and I was able to access the inhibitor switch in the top of the gearbox through the gearstick hole. It is a B**CH. After all that AND completely re-wring the power feed direct from the fuse box I found the problem to be the NEW gear knob switch. It's very easy for it to short out in the gear knob - kept blowing the fuse on mine. The connections to the gear knob switch are just a poor design. I wish I could find a better gear knob switch as I've the exact same issue with my MGB.

          Nick,

Thanks for the info! Did you manage to get to the switch without lowering anything? I don't think my hands are small enough to squeeze between the transmission tunnel and the gearbox!

          Cheers!

              Hi Jon,

I was underneath a Stag on a ramp today and I tried to see if I could reach that inhibitor switch. The good news is that I could

It did have the exhausts and prop shaft off and I didn't notice if their presence would have made it any harder, however I'd rather drop a prop shaft or exhaust than a gearbox

Anyway, if you've got a friendly garage with a ramp nearby then you should be able to check it out.

Gearbox wasn't lowered.I could get at the wires but I wasn't able to unscrew and remove the switch.

                  Julian, Nick,

Thanks to you both for the info. I will set aside a couple of hours on Saturday, it's supposed to be raining , and report back on my progress!
