    oil and brake light

After a few miles and at tickover both lights begin to dimly light up. Loose wire or ????

    #2
Hi I had the same with mine and it turned out that the bottom end needed rebuilding I hope your is something easier and cheaper. Have you got an oil pressure gauge fitted? I fitted one once I noticed the lights glowing and discovered that once the engine was warm the oil pressure dropped considerably almost to nothing.

    Good luck

Unfortunately a loose wire would make it flash off..... If its coming on the wire is connected and the pressure is failing... you could try an oil change to a classic heavier oil but if you already have that you don't have much place to go! I guess you could check out the oil pump and relief valve spring? just because its cheaper than the alternative!

Before resorting to despair, it is totally worth connecting a calibrated mechanical oil pressure gauge to see what is really going on.

Could be a variety of things, including a failing oil pressure switch. Or a sticky oil pressure relief valve. Or incorrectly assembled internals in the canister oil filter assembly, and so on. Or the worn oil pump already mentioned.

Low oil pressure CAN be due to worn crank bearings, but it can also be due to a lot of other things. Absolute first priority must be to establish what pressure you actually have.

Agree with Wilf - those pressure switches have a common failure mode that makes them come on at higher and higher pressures! A check of the actual oil pressure is the first thing to do.

            Cheers,
            Mike.

and fit the MGB type dual pressure and capilliary temperature gauge - more accurate on both readings.
