    Door Mirror replacement

    Afternoon All

My door mirror has finally given up the ghost, it was always fairly useless as far as being able to see anything but the road, but I managed to snag the car cover on it and it's broken off!

I am assuming it's the original mirror, so which aftermarket part replaces them without too much bother. I have seen the tex mirrors on Ebay etc. which state they are for a Stag but thought I would ask before shelling out and getting the door card off.

    Appreciate any pointers as always
    Cheers Glyn

    Hi Glyn,

IIRC there was more than one standard mirror, however TEX is the main brand. They are now owned by BMH (British Motor Heritage) - the people behind Gaydon. They do sell most parts directly, but LDparts also sell some TEX stuff.

    Cheers

    Julian

      Glynn,

All the suppliers sell the OE style Tex mirrors and stems. What you need to do is choose whether you have the older 'oval' style or the later 'square' type. Having experience of both, I prefer the later type.

I bought some like are fitted on MG's made by TEX. The adjustment on them is much better but I am not sure they are going to look right.

The ones I bought are like these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-of-Ge...item27d97433c4

They were also fitted to TR7's

            Cheers chaps
I'll have a look when I get home and post of quick picture of what was in there
i had assumed it was bolted from behind inside the door? So you can get it off from the outside! That's good news less stripping down.

            thanks again

              Hi Ian
i fitted this type to my Stag in the late 70's.
They were better for rear viewing than the ones fitted at the dealership by Triumph, however they didn't look as good..in my opinion

Just popped out to the garage for a proper look
I can see the screws to remove to mirror base so I soaked them with a bit of easing fluid

As the screws came away I heard something drop into thedoor!
It would seem the nuts used to hold it in place weren’t the fixed sort !!!

So the door car will have to come off after all!
PO bodge by the look of it there was cardboard and tapestuck in the mirror base!

                Just my luck
Here’s the mirror which came off

Never what you think it will be is it! Never that five minute job

My Stag only has a Drivers mirror so no issues with matching though!
                Cheers Glyn

                  Hi Glyn,

If yours is like this, you simply have to turn the arm 90 degrees, against the springback pressure, and that exposes two screws. Those go through the plastic baseplate which has fittings a bit like Rawlplugs and so, once unscrewed, the plastic baseplate should come away as well - that's the theory !

Seriously, the baseplate will probably be stuck but it can be persuaded out and a new one - which I think will come with the mirror - can be simply fitted.

                  Good luck. Cheers.

                  Julian

PS Oops, posted a bit too late However a new plastic baseplate may well fit ok Glyn. The holes should be round but you may find it'll fit ok. Worth getting your new one before you start stripping the door

                    Our posts crossed!
Mine didn't have what I think should have been captive nuts or similar (they are now in the bottom of the damn door)
I have found this one from Robsport which looks similar

                    Anyone used these?

                      Hi Glyn,

Yep, I've used one like that. As you may be able to see, the base plate incorporates the fixing so there are no captive nuts as such.

Once you get your new one it will all become clear !

It looks like Robsports' one with mirror and arm together is a little cheaper that LDparts who sell them separately.

                      Cheers

                          Update
mirror received next day ..cheers Robsport... Top service
fitted today and yes Julian it all made sense. I think the plastic lugs had broken off the one I took off...my excuse for not understanding anyway.
still can't see much out of it unless I dip down but at least it looks better ... Lovely afternoon for a totally pointless drive drive out Or as I told the mrs I need to test the mirror get yourself in the passenger seat quick
                          cheers glyn
