    alternator wiring

I am in the last throws of rebuilding my "72 mk1.5. One of my problems which I should be able to sort being a sparky (domestic), but i`m having a big blonde moment, is the wiring for a 18acr. When I got the car rats had devoured most of the wiring under the bonnet. I thought seeing as I was going to rewire most of it I would do away of control box etc and fit a 18 acr instead of the 11 ac that was in it. The only wiring I could salvage from the old loom was the large brown that goes to the stupid dangerous bulkhead bolt and the brown/purple that goes to the ignition light. I connected the brown to the central spade of the 18 acr using a 18 block connector, and in the same connector I put the brown/purple onto the small spade of the 18 ( I checked the brown/purple before connecting to alternator and with ignition on I had power). Run engine no charging . Why do I think I have missed something ? Please help me go from blonde to my normal grey.

The ignition light has to work does it not? Else the alternator wont kick in? (IE if the bulb is out it wont work)
