    wiper motor no fast speed

    Hi all,
I am at a loss to my next step.

Wipers work on slow (1st speed) and park ok. No discernable difference between 2nd speed and 1st speed. I know they go faster, 'cos someone showed me in the UK!

I have changed the brushes about a gazillion times, what a PIA. I first used a Paddocks card set, after elevating the card to correct height with bits of cork gasket, but fast speed brush broke so went to a (stag) e-bay brush card with an intact fast speed brush, but I broke the earth and slow speed brushes trying to get armature in (), so today I replaced those ones with new brushes I ordered from the USA and fitted them into the card. New springs came from an old biro after the others went 'ping' into never-never land.

After a few false starts with nothing happening - I got back to square one again. Slow speed wipers on both positions.

    New parking switch from LD.

NOS armature, but old motor is same.

    Earth is good.

    New wiper switch

I greased the wiper boxes when I had the dash out, new wiper boxes. What I haven't done is take the whole rack out. Wipers seem fairly easy to push using pinky pressure.
Maybe that fast speed brush is still not working, but I'm loathe to go back in there again.

Any other ideas apart from only going out when it's sunny?

Bloody hell Tanya - it sounds like you've done just about everything - how about changing the windscreen It's alright, I'm only kidding.

The only thing that I don't see mention of is whether you've checked that you're getting feed to the high speed terminal on the block connector - which could point to a wiper switch or wiring problem.

TBH I'm not that sure that could be it, as I think (I haven't got the wiring diagram in front of me) that when the motor gets a feed for the high speed brush, it then doesn't get a feed on the slow speed brush. However, at this stage, I think it makes sense to check everything

    Good luck.

    Cheers

    Julian

Ps Just thinking out loud and without the wiring diagram - should the low speed feed be cut when the high speed feed comes in ? and, if so, is that correct on your car ?

Mine doesn't have a fast wiper speed either - just slow and very slow!
Sorry but it had to be said. Adrian

Ha ha - but seriously Tanya, that could be a good point.

If you've got excessive friction somewhere (blades on screen perhaps) then the fast speed could be slowed down. Have you tried it with the wiper blades off the glass (tricky with the driver's side one I know ) to see if there is any difference in speeds ?

        Good luck.

        Cheers

Hmm, there is that new stuff you can put on the windscreen that makes the water run off, so not such a bad idea!!!

I must admit, although I kinda understand the wiring in principle, I think the fast speed supplements the slow speed brush (but don't quote me!), knowing where to check feeds on the multi-meter (which still confuses me with all its magic symbols and heiroglyphics), is another matter. I'll try your idea, with a wet windscreen and engine running too (battery is very good though).

            Just to conclude, although fast speed still isn't very...fast;

Power to slow and fast speed confirmed (only with bulb tester)

Tried with one wiper off screen and one wetted, better...

Will replace wiper rack as a winter job.....

              Hi Tanya,

Well, not exactly a perfect conclusion, but at least that's a bit of an answer.

However, before you change the rack, didn't you say that it's it's easy to move the wipers by hand ? If so then that would tend to suggest it's not a rack problem.

If not, that suggests that either you've still got too much friction on the screen (are the blades good ones?, do they 'flip over' on the forward/backward strokes ?) or possibly still electrical. Why not try running a temporary 12v feed straight from the battery to the terminals that you've identified as slow and fast to see.

              Good luck.

              Cheers

Mine also goes slow on a dry windscreen. Works well when (for old stuff) wet though...

You're lucky it's not a TR. Two speed on my old TR means slow and blown fuse!

Throughly wetted screen and got a faceful of washer fluid too. I do believe the wipers actually have a fast speed setting, yeah! Cracked it!
I also blew a few fuses while I tried to suss out the motor wiring and the various designs of brushes cards!
