    Brake shoe automatic ratchet adjusters

I have found that the ratchet auto adjusters on one of my rear brake shoes does not appear to work correctly. I've had it all apart, adjusted so the drum will turn with a little resistance, but as soon as I press the brake pedal the drum becomes almost seized against the shoes. I am told by robsport/paddocks these ratchet adjusters have not been available for years and they are not even shown in the rimmers catalog. Has anyone else had and got around this problem, or know where these parts may be obtained ? Otherwise I have an unusable stag just because of two bits of metal

Have you just fitted new brake shoes?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Are you absolutely sure you've got them assembled properly ? - it's very easy to get it wrong.

If you do a search on here you should find info - I've published 'right' and 'wrong' photos a number of times - but can't do on this tablet I'm afraid.

        Gooid luck.

        Cheer

Got my last set from Wards - admittedly a while back. They are bloody useless things, which is why I am making backplates with manual adjusters...

Sounds good, any idea of cost?

About £20 for a pair of MGB manual adjusters, a little cutting of the backplates and a few pence of scrap steel welded in to make a mounting platform for the adjusters. I have one made already and the other backplate cut but need to get my Argoshield bottle refilled.

Arguably, adjusting the fixed stop of the shoes instead of the cylinder end should finally give a Stag handbrake that works properly as the handbrake linkage is always at the most advantageous angle throughout the brake shoes life, and the brake can be finely adjusted with it all assembled and the wheel on...

Need to get the sodding Daimler out of the way too or may set fire to it as can't get the MIG past it

PS - what's parking like in Lewes on a Saturday John? Got a wedding in the afternoon at Lewes House, taking 2 cars and need to find a safe home for the Stag while I'm celebrating...

                      Many thanks for the replies.
jeffstag and seaking - thanks a lot - PMs sent.
I made some more enquiries and it seems the last of these ran out a couple of years ago.
No, I haven't fitted new shoes, although they haven't done many miles since fitted several years ago.
Julian, I located your "correct" picture and was thereby able to verify mine are the right way round. In taking them apart again it seems I misdiagnosed it as the adjuster as I noticed the brake cylinder was almost siezed. The brake pedal pressure can push the cylinders out, but the springs can't pull them back in, so that seems to be the issue. I'll be off to robsport hopefully tomorrow to pick some up.
The twist is that in checking the other side to be the right way round I found a PO had welded the two parts of the ratchet together (presumably it was too worn and didn't work). The firm who fitted the shoes for me several years ago must have known this (or even welded them together themselves).
Anyway I therefore now seek the offside ratchets instead (hence the PM's)
                      Cheers.

Sounds like a kit is brewing.

Too many wardens, no problem leave it with me and I be a taxi.

I had no end of problems trying to find a pair of adjusters last year. Eventually some came up on Ebay being sold by Richard Symonds. He wasn't sure how much to charge and ended up selling them for £16 each. IIRC he had several in stock and I bought 2 of them, they were new - possibly NOS. He might still have some left - I'll PM his email address to you if you want.

                          Richard

P.S. There is no difference between O/S and N/S - you just need to assemble them the opposite way round - and, as Julian says, make sure they are fitted correctly - it's easy to put them in back to front.

If Richard was selling them, that might suggest they are the same as 2000 types. That might give another possible source.

I ought to have some spare ones around too. I wonder where?

                            Cheers,
                            Mike.

Avoid going any where near Brighton on Sunday as the London to Brighton bike rides on. Road closures and major congestion!
