There shouldn't be fluid in any significant quantity, unless the seals are leaking. If you find enough to run out as a dribble then you might want to try one of the PAS leak stoppers/conditioners to try and stop it.
As Russ says, there shouldn't be any oil in the gaiters.
When I jacked mine up, oil came out of a hole on one gaiter (because of the angle of the car) - still not sure if it was damage or a deliberate air hole. Anyway, I peeled back the gaiter, emptied the oil and cleaned it all up and rotated the gaiter so the hole was at the top.
Over a year later, still no sign of oil. Not a perfect fix but it has got me through two MOTs without needing to replace seals. Clearly, it is only a slight leak.
