Soft Top Bolt Question - Prom Car Needed - Help required please

    Hi all

For months now my daughter has had her school prom arranged and laughed every time I suggested I took her and her friends in the Stag .....why would my friends want to go in that...were hiring a Classic VW Camper van.

Well having found out the cost of hiring a VW camper van, they now want to go in the stag...all last minute of course ! So urgent MOT booked for Saturday and Soft Top Frame repaid needed

I know that I have a bolt that has sheared on the soft top frame and I have (hopefully) attached some photos. My question is I can see there is a thread on the bolt, what Im not sure is does that thread screws into the two frame pieces it passes through or is the thread just for the nut that lives on the end.

I know it just passes through one of the bits as the the shank is smooth at that point but Im not sure about the other bit.

The reason I need to know is to give me some idea on trying the remove the pit of the bot that has been left in place. I need some back up if it pours down on Prom night

Anyone done this ? is it best to drill it out ? Any advice would be appreciated.

Lastly anyone know if they are still available or if any second hand ones are around ?

    Thanks

    Dazza

I'm sure Chris (Vmad) could help you - worth sending him a PM.

    Good luck with the prom

    Cheers

You can buy a bolt kit from the normal places... rimmers paddocks etc... but I dont know if you can buy them individually.
Difficult to get that broken bit out without damaging the hood, but you might be able to drill a through hole and then try to run a tap through it which could well screw it right through and out the other side. Just drilling it might do that too.

the frame itself is threaded as well as the bolt, you can buy them individually or as a repair kit I got mine from robsport.there is a blown up diagram on rimmer bros to see which bolts you need

As Jeff says, but you can use ordinary 1/4 unf bolts plus a sleeve, and some shim washers.

when those bolts shear there is usually a nut left on the outside which can be undone. Then if the broken part doesnt come out with the nut you might be able to get some grips on the end and work it out.

Thanks Guys - that was all really helpful.

Yesterday with help from Bracken Brae Garage - my friendly local Stag Specialist I managed to remove the piece of threaded bolt left within the frame and they even managed to find me an original replacement. It came out with a set of Grips in the end as suggested my V-Mad

So even if the weather isn't very good on Prom night at least we will all stay dry !

I mentioned to them that Id noticed a hesitance whilst accelerating quickly recently, they changed my fuel filter and then checked the carbs....no oil in the carbs....amazing what a difference it makes when we topped them up.

There should be an idiots guide to maintaining the car - just for me !
