I finally fitted the new battery & changed the oil, after an 8 month lay up I took care to fully prime the system before reconnecting the king lead from the coil. With just a little choke she started right away and was sounding sweet !!
However on smelling a fuel leak I had to turn off and investigate. I thought things were cured once I'd sorted the union of the tube into the rubber pipe just before the fuel filter (leaking nicely onto the wiper motor !). Upon restarting, still a strong fuel smell - ah, the water in the vee wasn't the water pump seal but fuel peeing out of the bottom of the n/s car (the o/s carb seems fine).
I guess something's stuck or perished - there seems to be resistance in the dashpot, what other checks should I carry out ?
Cheers
