gearbox oil

Afternoon all, brilliant day yesterday at Brooklands, really impressed with how many cars were there.
I'm sure I read on a post some time ago that I could use normal engine oil in my manual gearbox, if so, can I use vr1 same as engine?

Hi Drew,

I'd use Valvoline gearbox oil rather than the VR1 (which I do use in the engine and nothing else).
When I did my last gearbox oil change I used Valvoline EP80, the difference is very apparent with smoother changes from cold and I don't think you can get better than Valvoline.

No connection with them at all.

You can normally get it cheapest at Eurocarparts at the moment £31.14 for 5 litres 522770390 is their list number

Eurocarparts have an ebay shop, usually cheaper and you can order and pick up locally on the same day.

Hi, I use VR! in the engine and Castrol VMX in the OD gearbox. Use VMX in any manuals I've had for years including the Spitfire which is 4 man and 4 OD

Why put an engine oil in a gearbox which has different requirements?
Unless you are after a thinner oil for performance and economy and smoother gear-change?
In which case why not use what I use, Mobil one SHC gearbox oil, it is 75/90 but doesnt pour thick like castrol ep90, in fact it pours quite thin indeed, I have read it to be 10 times stronger than EP90.
I use it in my motorcycle gearboxes and my Stag manual with OD box and diff for years.

I rang Mobil tech who claimed it would work fine with the overdrive which indeed it does.

duckhams 20/50 in my gearbox, smooth change, no issues

Penrite 20/50 in my engine. picked up bulk buy at the Chiltern Hill show £25/ 5 litres

Good morning, I did find a thread about using engine oil, mentioned different additives etc in gear oil, so I have ordered gear oil and will see what happens.
