New Stag Owner and forum member saying hello and help

Good evening fellow stag owners, forum members and owners club members.

My name is Drew Edwards from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. I am 61 and I live with my long time (20 years) partner Sue and her daughter Victoria.
I am the M.D. of my own commercial property consultancy, now on a semi retired basis.
I have been involved in the restoration of historic miltary vehicles since the mid 1980's ranging from WW2 Jeeps to a WW2 16 ton Scammell SV2S wrecker including many Lanf Rovers various.
My first classic car restoration was in 1980 when I rebuilt a Frog Eye Sprite, I sold this after 2 years and restored a MGBGT which was sold on to finance my first Series One military Land Rover rebuild in 1985.
Three years ago Sue decided she would like a classic car of her own to take to classic car shows along with my current Land Rover so, as she had always wanted a "Merc Sports" we found a 1977 Mercedes 350SL in silver, low proven mileage, 84,000, mechanically sound but needing body restoration. This was duly restored, 31 hours of actual steel fabrication and mig welding was needed to replace hidden rust under the factory underseal. It is now back to it's panzer wagon strength. Whilst I can spray paint, I had never used metallic paint so the car was treated to a professional repaint using modern water based paint and laquers.
Taking this car to classic rather than military biased shows opened up an almost new world which we really enjoyed so last winter I decided to leave the military vehicle scene, sell both my restored Series 11A Land Rovers, and buy my self a restored classic car.
Both Land Rovers were sold at Bonham's Wetherby Auction in November 2013 and my hunt for a classic began.
In my youth I had owned a Mk 4 Spitfire and a 150 bhp TR6. I now fancied another TR6 but after a serious look around and a few test drives I realised the TR6 was no longer for me, I wanted someting more comfortable with power steering etc. A Stag fitted the bill.
I did not want to buy a Stag which needed restoring, I have hung up the torch and Goggles. Neither did I want a new restoration as problems may have been hidden so the search was on for a low mileage older restoration still in good order with a full record of the restoration, photos, bills, etc etc.
After looking at several in Yorkshire and the North East and t'interweb I found a January 74 ( built August 73 so now tax free) Manual with Overdrive Stag in white.
It ticked all the boxes, it had a bare shell restoration in 2003/4,much rust proofing, a full mechanical overhaul, it still had it's original engine, and new interior/hood etc The body was almost unmarked, the underside was very clean also, it has covered a proven 64,000 miles. The only faults we found were noisy front wheel bearings ( replaced with new) a seeping front diff oilseal ( replaced with new), the speedo seems to read slow, when checked with my sat nav it seems to be reading around 10 mph slow.
Now it is out of it's winter hibernation I have a couple of jobs to do which I need help with please.
    1) Is the colour "Old English White" or did Triumph paint Stags another white? Where can I find the paint code on the car? Does any one supply accurate coloured paint in small quantities? I want to sort a few small chips.
    2) The speedo continues to read approx 10 mph slow however it has developed a new fault in that when setting off and accelerating upto circa 40/50 mph and slowing down through the same speed band the speedo needle swings up and down madly, sometimes reaching 80!!!! before eventually settling down over an indicated 50 mph. Can someone please enlighten me as to what the possible cause (s) and remedies may be.

Many thanks for your help in anticipation,

    Kind regards,

    Drew

hi drew and welcome to the club forum ,you will find this place very handy a lot of accumulated knowledge on here.
Q1, re paint "triumph white 19 " there does seem to be a few shades of this though
Q2, speedos are often faulty but it could also be tyre sizes that have an effect as for the erratic behaviour that could just be the cable where it enters the back of the speedo.
I am sure you will get many replies to help you overcome these small niggles .how about a couple of pictures nice to see another nice white stag instead of all these yellow mustardy and other dodgy colours !!

      Hi Drew
I feel like a relative newbie sometimes, there is a wealth of information on here,if you are signed in ,you can browse the technical section.
The paint codes are somewhere, but someone will be along shortly.
The speedo cable may be kinked somewhere, so follow it along it's route to see if that;s the case.sometimes the braided wire ,within the outer sheeth can fray and cause it to stick,so you'll have to replace it if that's the case. Hopefully then the speedo will stop waving at you.
      Regards Ken.

Hi Drew, welcome to the Club and the Forum. If you look on the nearside 'B' post by the door catch there should be a plate with the commission number, paint and trim codes. If you look here, http://www.stagbytriumph.co.uk/colours.html you can see what it had when it left the factory. Bear in mind that as it has been re-sprayed it may have a different shade of white so it may be best to take it to a paint shop where they can analyse the actual colour / shade of paint for you.

Re the speedo needle, common causes will be a dry or damaged cable within the outer sheath or the speedo itself needing an overhaul or finally a problem where the cable connects to the 'box. The first is the easiest to remedy but you don't need to chuck more than a dribble of lubricant down the cable as it will work its way into the speedo head and ruin it.

Others will be along shortly to confirm / correct all of this.

        Happy motoring,

        Mark

Glad to see someone else with a taste in colour, but 19 Triumph White does seem to come in many, many shades. I have just had a nightmare matching the white of my (apparently extensively re-painted) car. The early cars were more like old English White, whereas later ones seem more like Arctic white.

in respect of speedo, it sounds like a kink in the cable, either from incorrect routing, wrong bulkhead hole, or trapped/kinked at the gearbox end. The 10% under read though sounds like it may have a lower ratio diff fitted, assuming the wheels and tyres are standard? I fitted a 3.4 TR6 diff to my MOD Stag, which resulted in 10% under reading. I sorted this later by fitting 15" wheels and 215/60 tyres which were slightly smaller radius, now under reads by about 5-6% so better. Cruises better and returns 30 mpg for a slight loss in acceleration.

good luck with your car and welcome to the paranoid madhouse.

My work mate, Crossys Stag is also "19" it has all the shades of white (all 19 of them I think!) at the same time!! LOL He will read this and shout at me later!!!!

Speedo could be anything but a kink in the cable is most likely. Could be worn out / loose right angle drive but that usually results in no speedo reading at all. Also damage to the outer could have been caused by it falling on to exhaust system at some time in its life...
(interesting to see Ians comments re the speedo difference .. I have the same diff with a Rover V8 and box and have about the same 10% error)

Welcome to Stag ownership and our Forum.... we mostly try to help but often confuse and go chasing red herrings!!! and a few of us are coming your way for the National Day in August!

Welcome to the Forum but we've already got a Drew so this is going to be confusing perhaps we should just call you Bruce!

I'll save the primer jokes until we know you better particularly as I've never mentioned that my MGB is primer!. Certainly sounds like you've bought a good car.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Stag ownership.

All good advice on where to find the correct code for your white primer.......

as already said, the under read could be due to a higher (3.45:1) ratio diff being fitted. This would give approximately a 7% error. Unlikely to be tyres as to get an under read you'd need bigger tyres than the standard 185/80 14", and this would be noticeable. It could be that the wrong drive gear has been fitted to the gearbox.

The flickering needle could be a cable problem. Undo the cable from the speedo head and withdraw the inner cable. Lightly coat it with oil or a light grease as you re insert it, but leave the top 3" dry.

                  Hi Drew

well done on such a sensible choice and colour, My triumph white is colour code 19 and is a creamy'ish white. Rover White is not a bad match for touching up the odd stone chip but a paint shop will be able to give you the exact code for the shade of #19 that you have.

Ignore all the "primer" nonsense from the technicolour yawn lot Triumph knew white was best as that was the colour used in most of their press marketing

Regarding your speedo, mine did this a couple of years back, it got so distracting on a long journey that I disconnected it at the speedo head and relied on satnav. it was then that I found that the tiny o-ring seal in the drive at the manual gearbox end of the cable had failed. gearbox oil was feeding / screwing up the cable and had literally flooded the back of the speedo! with the cable disconnected oil was dripping onto my trousers, but not before i had realised

A pain replacing the o-ring but it has stopped that particular issue

Other reasons or jerky speedo needle are as above.

You can get your speedo recalibrated by specialists, little bit of work required to establish how many rotations of the speedo cable occur to a single rotation of the back wheel but other than that all is needed is your old unit and a credit card.

If the car is standard, then the "Turns per Mile" figure on the speedo face should be enough. 1000 for the Stag I think (without going outside to check). For my PI it's 840. It's written on the face, usually at the bottom on the RHS. It is on mine anyway!

                    Cheers,
                    Mike.

                      Hi drew.
Dont beleive this!!!! I also have a white 19 1974 stag, auto, and live in Northallerton and am semi retired. Are you a clone of me?..
Same problem with the speedo too. Mine was just plain fubar'd so fitted one from a 2.5 s which took care of the diff change and now reads almost correct. Send me a pm with your tel no and we could meet up and compare stag maladies!
                      Regards

welcome some good suggestions on the speedo cable, it was poor routeing which made mine worse. colour code 64 is the one they are looking for , 19 for underneath.

good tip but after 40ish years who knows what diff or speedo drive is fitted nor the impact of the tyre size. Shame to send a speedo off for reconditioning and find that it is still inaccurate..
