Good evening fellow stag owners, forum members and owners club members.
My name is Drew Edwards from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. I am 61 and I live with my long time (20 years) partner Sue and her daughter Victoria.
I am the M.D. of my own commercial property consultancy, now on a semi retired basis.
I have been involved in the restoration of historic miltary vehicles since the mid 1980's ranging from WW2 Jeeps to a WW2 16 ton Scammell SV2S wrecker including many Lanf Rovers various.
My first classic car restoration was in 1980 when I rebuilt a Frog Eye Sprite, I sold this after 2 years and restored a MGBGT which was sold on to finance my first Series One military Land Rover rebuild in 1985.
Three years ago Sue decided she would like a classic car of her own to take to classic car shows along with my current Land Rover so, as she had always wanted a "Merc Sports" we found a 1977 Mercedes 350SL in silver, low proven mileage, 84,000, mechanically sound but needing body restoration. This was duly restored, 31 hours of actual steel fabrication and mig welding was needed to replace hidden rust under the factory underseal. It is now back to it's panzer wagon strength. Whilst I can spray paint, I had never used metallic paint so the car was treated to a professional repaint using modern water based paint and laquers.
Taking this car to classic rather than military biased shows opened up an almost new world which we really enjoyed so last winter I decided to leave the military vehicle scene, sell both my restored Series 11A Land Rovers, and buy my self a restored classic car.
Both Land Rovers were sold at Bonham's Wetherby Auction in November 2013 and my hunt for a classic began.
In my youth I had owned a Mk 4 Spitfire and a 150 bhp TR6. I now fancied another TR6 but after a serious look around and a few test drives I realised the TR6 was no longer for me, I wanted someting more comfortable with power steering etc. A Stag fitted the bill.
I did not want to buy a Stag which needed restoring, I have hung up the torch and Goggles. Neither did I want a new restoration as problems may have been hidden so the search was on for a low mileage older restoration still in good order with a full record of the restoration, photos, bills, etc etc.
After looking at several in Yorkshire and the North East and t'interweb I found a January 74 ( built August 73 so now tax free) Manual with Overdrive Stag in white.
It ticked all the boxes, it had a bare shell restoration in 2003/4,much rust proofing, a full mechanical overhaul, it still had it's original engine, and new interior/hood etc The body was almost unmarked, the underside was very clean also, it has covered a proven 64,000 miles. The only faults we found were noisy front wheel bearings ( replaced with new) a seeping front diff oilseal ( replaced with new), the speedo seems to read slow, when checked with my sat nav it seems to be reading around 10 mph slow.
Now it is out of it's winter hibernation I have a couple of jobs to do which I need help with please.
1) Is the colour "Old English White" or did Triumph paint Stags another white? Where can I find the paint code on the car? Does any one supply accurate coloured paint in small quantities? I want to sort a few small chips.
2) The speedo continues to read approx 10 mph slow however it has developed a new fault in that when setting off and accelerating upto circa 40/50 mph and slowing down through the same speed band the speedo needle swings up and down madly, sometimes reaching 80!!!! before eventually settling down over an indicated 50 mph. Can someone please enlighten me as to what the possible cause (s) and remedies may be.
Many thanks for your help in anticipation,
Kind regards,
Drew
