    Coil

Anyone repositioned their coil to reduce operating temperature?

Mines always been mounted on the drivers side of the bulkhead, never bothered putting it back as it works fine where it is.

Yes. Mine have always been lifted an inch or so clear of the block. They work fine there.....

Mine had already been moved when I bought my car but, following a suggestion on here. I fitted it with it's own little condom - aka Mini coil protector

          Cheers

Julian, you're really showing off your fully functional wiper motor aren't you
mind you, I could just put the coil where the wiper motor is supposed to go and only use the car on really hot days
(Can't you tell I've had a tough day of wiper motor hell )

Mine is mounted on a little bracket I made up, it hangs from one of the bolts that secure the bonnet catch (lower portion) to the bulkhead. This allows me to use the original length King HT lead.

If you search for a post of mine from 14 months or so ago (I think it involved 'Lumenition problem? in the title) and there you'll find me wrongly suspecting Lumenition for the problem I was suffering, then doing a little basic research to find the real culprit, a new coil that didn't work as well as the old one, and the root cause, so called 'heat soak' after engine stoppage.

Since I removed the coil and then repositioned it I have no further problems, in my case it was conduction of heat plus 'heat soak' that put it over the edge, and maybe the new coil being painted black. The repositioning of the coil, along with other things are now on my 'has to be done' list before I will run a Stag for more few miles from home.

              Good Luck

                Good idea Tanya

I just wish my wiper motor worked as well as it looks That's just a paint job on an old motor which used to work ok. Since painting it, it has been especially troublesome, although not as bad as yours. There's thanks for you !! (I know, I know - it was probably me that introduced the problems )

                Cheers

Why not just install tear-offs on your windscreens???

It works for Lewis Hamilton, et al.

Can anyone confirm it is ok to mount a coil horizontally?

That's how they are fitted to many spitfires (Triumph variety)

Trouble is I don't have a parcel shelf in the engine bay! I seem to have found the answer to my own question, seems it should not be done with an oil filled coil. Unless anyone knows different

Then again possibly not, one suggestion is oil filled are ok if the terminals are horizontal???

Arent they all oil filled? Keeps them cooler than they would otherwise get. That one in the picture is oil filled. The one on my Spitfire was oil filled... I don't believe there is a problem lying them down. Your problem is more to do with space in a Stag. Inner wing or bulkhead is favourite or as Dave said (post no 4) just lift it up in the bracket to make sure its not touching the engine or manifold.
There will only be a bare minimum air gap inside which is why, when they do get too hot (much too hot) they do sometimes expand too much, open up and let the oil out. (I've never seen one do it in 40 years of playing around with this stuff but I have seen the photos and know it does happen)... = knackered coil.

added later: I think if they aren't oil filled they will be epoxy or resin filled.. I would expect them also to be more expensive and labelled specifically as epoxy or resin filled. They could be mounted upside down or horizontally!
