    Gearbox leaking

    Hi

Some help needed, I've had a leaky auto gearbox for months now, have checked the normal issues, but for the past month the car has been on my drive slopping down. A fuel tank issue has prevented it being used. Can't believe the box has continued leaking and I can't see from where. I have cleaned the box from under Neath and am going to look further tomorrow. Any advice on where it mat be coming from would be much appreciated.

    Breather not perished
    Bango ok
Drive in clean condition on the inside

It looks like it's leaking from the bolts but that's unlikely.

Just been out to have a look under. There is a small amount of oil residue from the front near side bolt running back onto the gearbox sump (the stay to the engine sump fixes here)

    What should I do?

      Mark,
Is your auto box overfilled with oil? I ask as my Stag kept leaking auto gear oil and I kept toping it up, and the leak continued…… Recently I drained the excess oil and the leak has completely disappeared. I put this down to me not measuring the dipstick level properly

Ok it's still showing signs of oil around the bolts, but I can't seem to make it leek enough to find out where. I'll take her out for a spin tomorrow and hopefully by the time I get back there will be some better evidence. This is making my brain ache.

            Does it look like this?:

Is it a BW35? Mine dumps oil all over the floor when it hasn't been used for longer than about 3 weeks; just lets go. I've learnt to put a big potty underneath and not put ant more oil in until the car is ready to be used. It usually makes unhappy whiny noises when it needs oil.
I'm going get a pro to put a 4 spd Monarch unit in...sometime....just enjoying the car too much....

I have no idea why they do this, the PO seems to have replaced the seals and nothing comes out the breather pipe.

Tanya, there is a rubber tube connector on the top of the box/breather pipe. It probably is split or come adrift.

Now that is interesting..I have never bothered to look at Rimmer's diagrams for this part of the car. It shows a breather pipe, dipstick and filler pipe for the BW35. I've only found a black rubber pipe lying by the right bulkhead (breather/filler????) and the dipstick holder. There is no cap or anything on the rubber tube, just open.
Oh well, I have a good supply of cardboard for the garage floor.

Will book in for the transplant..soon...ish...maybe end of summer....

I put in a post a couple of months ago as my bw35 does the same. It seems to happen after only a week after use. Whatever maintains the pressured oil is giving up. I took the car to Faversham and they suggested that the best course would be to replace it with the later box 65 or go for a 4 speed box when funds allow.
On the subject of Faversham they have transformed my car and it drives beautifully now.

                  Good luck whatever you do.

                    Hi

Thanks for all your comments, yes this is what mine looks like however no so bad after 24 hrs. I do have a 4 speed box ready for transplant in the winter months this year but trying to get the best of the summer first. It's just so messy!!!!!

The breather pipe is right at the top of the box and a bummer to get to. However, a simple test to see if it's ok is to blow down the pipe, it should pressurise, if it's split you will hear it down below and you won't be able to pressurise the pipe.

Car is back in the garage tonight so hopefully will get some evidence tomorrow.

Just a point, if for some reason it is the breather tube (my check giving bum info) is there a easy way to check and replace?

The BW35 oil leak culprit is the non return valve which is supposed to stop oil from flowing back from the torque convertor into the 'box. It fails and the box floods while standing unused.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Well it's a good week on and no leaks. This is very frustrating I must say. However, trawlerling through the forams I have found a few answers. One of the best is discovering the access panel on the passenger footwell. This is ope now just waiting for the leak to stat again.

At least I'm not losing oil at the moment.

Am I correct in saying that to check the oil I need to run up to temperature and check while engine running?
