    Fuel pump

You might remember my recent "I give up" thread mix of electric and fuel problems. Well today I have found out a big contributor to the fuel issues -I discovered a leak from the electronic SU fuel pump - out of one of the screws that joins the black cover to the silver baseplate. I took the roe halves apart but no obvious diaphragm or gasket leaks. Presume there is a failure elsewhere.

So I will order a new fuel pump - but which one would you recommend and why? Another electronic, an original SU manual or is there another alternative that doesn't need different plumbing? One point to consider, I've had occasional airlock issues with the failed pump and the previous manual one.

    All views please!! Many thanks

This one has proved popular, and reliable:

Showing as out of stock, but might be worth contracting the seller.

Purely from experience, I would stick with the old SU pump with points. I have had my Stag for 24 years, and the original pump is still in there, although I have fitted a new set of points. If the electronic type fails, that's it. You are stuck unless you carry a spare. If the points type starts playing up you can usually give it a clout to get it going again, then sort it out as soon as you get home!

Quick update: Fitted a replacement points-based SU pump on Wednesday and Stag passed it's MOT today. It also seems to be starting better from warm so I'm wondering if the electronic pump was over-supplying fuel.

Had a look out of interest, I've had that same replacement pump for 28 years!

Another "work-around" with the points pump.

I once had mine fail - the tiny spring broke, that performs the 'over-centre' flick to open or close the points as the plunger moves. We were in France (fortunately close to Le Havre on the last day of holiday).

            Fix
            Wedge the points closed
Use a long length of twin cable, fitted with insulated crocodile clips on one end.
Remove the power supply lead from the pump, attach it to one lead of the twin cable, and the end of the other lead to the pump.
Pass the twin lead out of the boot to the rear seat where 2 daughters are sitting.
Tell the one of the daughters to tap the two crocodile clips together at a reasonable speed; faster when going up hills, slower when cruising or stationary.
When her wrists get tired, pass to the other daughter.

In this mode, we continued to the campsite in Le Havre, down to the ferry the next morning, and from Portsmouth drove home to Bournemouth.
            Never missed a beat!

            Simples !!

Very inventive, but the cost of two daughters dissuades me.

Yes, you could do a lot of Stag upgrades with what they cost!

And, when you get tired of it, you could sell the Stag. Seems amazingly difficult to get rid of two daughters - yes, they are both married with children now, but still cost a lot more per year than the Stag!

Yes indeed, I continue to enjoy paying up for my 2 grown up kids so much I took on two step kids now have a toddler.

By the way, big thanks to Mick Ward who spent ages breakdown-proofing my car today. Early days but it's like a different car, not least, it starts!
