    What Nuts are best ?

Having been advised by my local club collegues that the original Stag wheel nuts can strip their threads causing all sorts of potential problems, I now want your opinion on which other options you consider to be "best".

I have standard Stag Mark 2 alloy wheels with standard black inserts.

I appreciate that "best" can be a personal opinion and hence the reason for the poll. Two things really to consider when making your choice 1 ) which look best 2) which wear the best, ie does the chrome rust, does the black wear off etc etc.....

I have added the option "none" in response to another recent poll in relation to faults that you have experienced with you stag where a member pointed out that "none" wasnt an option.

However if you do choose none on this poll I would like to see you driving with no wheel nuts before I take that option!!

    Darren

I have never had a problem with the original nuts, as long as you start them of by hand had put oil on the threads each aplication there fine.

If they wear just put wire inserts in them!

Changed my Alloys for "Allycat Rallye Specials" some 6 or 7 years back & they came with chrome wheel nuts.

By now though the chrome has peeled off on most of the nuts & I need to change them.
Have still got the original Stag black nuts but they won't look all that good with the chrome/gold colours of the alloys (see attached pic).

Am currently awaiting a reply from "Monarch" (the Allycat Alloys supplier) to see if they
      have any replacement nuts.

I bought a set of black steel nuts from the usual bad boy major supplier, they were showing signs of rust after six months (about 1500 miles of mainly dry use, although the car does live outside under a cover).

I would suggest that you change the alloy nuts for steel ones as the thread strips from the alloy if overtightened and definitely do not oil them as you will get false torque readings and possibly snap the studs.

I've never had a problem with the alloy nuts, always tighten by hand.

A member bought new studs (I can't remember why) and then suffered from loose wheels and snapped studs. The supplier replaced the lot and problem disapeared so be careful what you buy.

I have original alloy wheel nuts which I have polished to a bright finish, I am pleased with the result, used to have s/s . I have been advised by local specialist that wheel nuts should be torqued to 55lb/ ft. there is as much danger of shearing wheel studs if overtightened.I always use two steel wheel nuts to fit wheel on using the tapered edge of these nuts to make sure wheel is centred and then fit two alloy nuts and then remove the steel wheel nuts and then fitthe final two alloy nuts.

Given that the votes are currently split between s/steel and original, I like your idea of polishing up the originals.

Could you give me a run down on the process you have used to get them to a shiny finish ? A photo would be great to see what finish I could expect.

                  Hi Mick,

I decided to tighten my wheel nuts to the specified torque and stripped most of the threads. The threads came out like coil springs. The Stag Drivers Handbook tells you to oil the threads. I have replaced all the alloy nuts with steel ones nowand Ifeel a lot safer.

                    Hi Dazza

I purchased a set of mops from ebay which I mounted onto my bench grinder, then found an old bolt of the correct thread to fit the nuts (something left over from my suspension rebuild), this allowed me to safely hold the nuts:?and work through the grades of mop until a nice shine was acheived.

Atime consuming process but I thought it was worth the effort to have something a little different, beware when polishing, make sure you wear a mask as lots of fine dust is produced.

You will find quite a few of these mop kits on ebay and they come with the adaptor to fit them to your bench grinder.

When I get a chance i will take a close up picof nuts:?!!!and post.

Striped one of my alloy ones so got SS nuts from paddocks ,They look spot on but are heavy so do nothing for the unsprung weight ,but on a stag does it matter?
