    Pre 84 no mot

Just been out shopping with the mrs.

Reading the the classic car weekly headlines stated that in the next 3 years all pre 84 cars could be mot exempt if the are standard. Looks like my bw35 gearboxes might be worth a few pounds in the future.
will be odd though some cars will need to pay road fund licence but will not need a mot. Brussels might be good for a few things lol

last step before all cars made before 84 are hounded off the roads!!

Belgium has a taxation class for old cars that on the face of it seems a bargain, except you cant use them. Pay through the nose if you do want to use them. google it. I got the details from a nice Belgian Chap who sold my dad an 1971 Range Rover that the Luxomberg owner has given up with due to the bureaucracy.

Luxomberg is horrific at being sympathetic to old cars on the road. MoT as if it is a brand new car anyone!!!!

Careful what you wish for chaps

Personally I think it is a very bad thing. ALL cars should be subject to an annual MoT and many others in the classic movement have said the pre 1960 exemption is a mistake. No matter how competent a DIY mechanic you think you are there are some things you cannot check/test at home - brakes being one of them. I have a well equipped workshop compete with a pit and a ramp but I don't have a rolling road to check the brakes and I doubt many people have. You only have to look at the number of people that post on here that there car has failed the MoT on this or that "minor" point. It will just degenerate into a lot of very nice looking but lethal "old" cars on the roads which in turn will lead to legislation to effectively ban us from the roads for anything other than special events. As richardthestag says "be careful what you wish for".

I am with that. A few non-MoT classics involved in serious accidents, and we are finished. what is wrong with an Mot, providing it is carried out by someone who knows what they are looking at? I certainly wouldn't skip mine.

          Agreed.

Little doubt but the Brussels is anti classic cars, and also anything non-standard (e.g. kits/replicas).

I trust them not at all.

I'm beginning to wonder how relevant to-days MOT is for our classics, although I'm on the side that would argue for an MOT.
              Mine failed its test today.
The only thing that's changed, relating to my car, different from the last few successful years, was the examiner, he's left, probably retired, he understood my car.
I now have warped front disks, warped rear drums (?), a rear wheel bearing with to much play and a drivers seat that is too loose!
Funny thing is, last years and the year before that, advisory of excessive play in the steering column, didn't appear in this years, go figure.
I should have know better when the guy taking the booking, after I said "I'd like to book my Triumph Stag in for an MOT" asked "and what make is that?". At least I've got ten days for a re-test and they told me there would be no charge, "you're not taking any business away from us because we couldn't fix it anyway! Our parts suppliers said eh? when I asked them for the cost of replacements"

I totally agree what next are the Euro nuts going to come out with . I think we should adopt the French way of obeying European Laws if they don't like them They don't. All cars should be tested it makes sense but they will not listen to us what do we know , we only pay their wages .

What is it all about cant see the logic a car can be a lethal weapon whatever the age so at least a test every 3000 miles or 3 years

I would still present mine for a test even if i did not need it as i cannot check the brakes as well as the brake test in a mot station
                    Cheers Glenn

It will be interesting to see what the insurance companies make of all this. If numbers of accidents involving pre-84 cars shoot up then so will the premiums. Classic insurance is presumably relatively cheap because accident rates for classics are presently low (low annual miles, older, careful drivers etc). A bonus would be if they chose to offer a discount for cars that do take a voluntary test in future. Wishful thinking perhaps ...

Stupid idea! In my humble but irrelevant opinion, all vehicles using the public highways should be subject to an annual safety inspection regardless of age.
