    Petrol cap rubber

    Just a quick question.
    I've just replaced a worn out petrol cap rubber, that from the look of it, although sealing, never seemed to have fitted centrally to the fuel pipe opening. The new one fits, but considering the previous statement is there any way of adjusting the position? In fact the new seal is, at the moment, being dislodged by the cap locking bar.
    Anybody experiencing a similar issue?

    Not sure what the problem is, but the new seals are quite hard. A smear of Vaseline, or similar, on the sealing face helps it sit better.

      Mine has a slightly bent pin on the cap that the seal holder slides on and therefore it would hit the hole cockeyed to start with because it swings into place when you close it.

      As the pin is cast with the cap, the chances of snapping it by trying to straighten was too great.

      As a work around, because the cap was otherwise good and had decent chrome, I pulled the rollpin that holds the seal holder and spring on and redrilled the rollpin hole a couple of mm further up effectively shortening it and stopping it hitting the edge of the hole.

      It now covers the hole (you can see it does by the impression marks on the seal) when you close it and still clamps hard enough to seal it...

        I had to bend the pin a tiny bit on mine to let the new seal past it

          I bent the shaft the seal fits on on mine until the seal sat right. For some reason over the years this appears to bend, but I have no idea why!

            I was afraid to bend mine back in case the sodding thing snapped!

            It's the side thrust put on the shaft when closing - a few years of that and it's the same as loads of little hammer blows - it is a Sh1te design that might have been tolerable if the cap had been machined out of billet instead of cast from monkey metal....
