Beware of powder coated hood frames

I recently carried out a repair on a reconditioned hood frame, the frame had been reconditioned but they had assembled the frame and then had it powder coated, the result is all the moving joints were not lubricated and very stiff due to the powder coating covering everything. One bolt had broken and some parts of the frame were bent due to it being very difficult to erect, they had also left off some rubber seals and collapsed the seal rail with a pop rivet, making it impossible to fit a new seal. Powder coating looks good and works well on hood frames but the parts must be powder coated before assembly, making sure all joints can move freely.

What was the person who had this done thinking of the powder coaters should also have said no way

This was not a DIY reconditioning, it was done by a company that recondition hood frames.

        Tony,

If any rubber parts hadn't been left off, they would not have survived the oven anyway, and the oven may not have survived the ensuing fire!

Adding this to your valid comments on lubrication etc. makes it clear that all frame parts should be powder coated before final assmbly, not after. Thanks for the warning.

        Regards

        Steve

          Hi Tony,

Interesting this - mine was done in the very same manner and I experienced exactly the same problems and more, I had a bolt sheer on first use!
I was absolutely horrified and needless to say I had a long battle with the company that did it - but got nowhere, I had to sort it all out myself.
          I'll pm you

          Best

After having had a stove enamal and powder coat company for twenty years

I thought that would have been logical to powder coat first !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must add that the frame had clearly not been taken apart before coating as all the bolts had rust on them - this would not have been the case if the frame had been taken apart, checked, coated and the re-assembled.
Very shoddy to say the least but not cheap in price!

I know Stags have horns but this is a professional hood job done by a Stag hood restorer for a local garage.

I wasn't aware there were work opportunities for blind hood fitters

When I asked about this type of fit, I was told you have to allow for shrinkage!!

                        ok I see now

get the hood wet by immersing in water
if in trouble use paddle to row to terra firma

Who told you that Steve? I think you must be winding us up - no professional hood fitter would have the brass neck to hand that back and ask for money!!

Ohhhhh!! sorry mate - I remember something about this.... sorry to effectively call you a fibber
