    EJ Ward stareter mod relay

    Hi All

Have one of EJ Wards starter relay kits fitted and works well but in the last 3 months it has played up and it can be taken apart and all I have to do is clean the contact points and it starts every time.

I want to replace it with an alternative version, can anyone tell me the handling power of the relay so I can get another one?

I emailed EJ Wards twice but they have never replied

    Any help appreciated

    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,
That's a coincidence, I have the Wards relay mod and it's just started to play up,(maybe it's a yellow thing ) clicks once then starts second time, I was going to post on here but you beat me to it. Interesting to see what info you get.
    Cheers

        Thanks Tim

Yes Steve. Its easy to clean and has lasted about 3 months and now gone down hill

Will clean tonight as I am using the car for work tomorrow and then buy another 30amp as Tim indicated

        Cheers

              Thanks PJM

I have just tried a spare Bosch 30amp one in black and it wont work. Just cleaned the points on the Wards one and once again, it goes every turn of the key. Not good on electrics, but is there more than one type of relay?

              Cheers

I just googled relay, yes, there are different types, have a read of this and see half way down 'pole and throw'

                  Short answer... yes!
Normaly open, normaly closed, change over plus all the diferent sized ones in between......
However given that you are having to clean the terminals regularly suggests that the one you have is too low a rating and its burning the contacts....or as I said in a long winded post some time ago your starter coil is drawing too much current.......and overloading the relay you have fitted to overcome the starter coil problems.....

Have a look here.... I would be looking for a high current relay to over come your burning contacts..... it cant do any harm to have a heavier duty relay...

The RF70 will need larger terminals for the starter solenoid but your ignition switch wiring will just use the normal 6.3mm spade connectors. It does suggest that the relay will be able to carry more than enough current to switch your starter coil / solenoid

It's on my list to fit a starter relay. I have a 40 amp Bosch unit ready and waiting. Size matters sometimes!

The relay I have that came with teh kit is a 40amp one, so cant go any higher.

Why??? If yours is burning out it is either too low rating or your system is drawing too much current?
