It seems that we (in the UK) will no longer have to display a tax disc from October 2014, but will 'historic vehicle' owners still need to go online and pay £0.00 every year, if we do then what is the point?

I think there is a difference between 'licencing' a vehicle and the disc itself. The tax was just a visible indication that the vehicle is licenced, but these days that can all be done electronically. Paying or not for the licencing is not really relevant!
So, yes, I suspect from October we will still have to go on-line and re-licence but will not actually get anything back to put on the car. Except maybe for an acknowledgement.

We will indeed as we need to declare our cars licenced or SORN.
Got one of the replica discs, Dec 71, put it on the car at a show, then forgot to take it off. Drove round for a week, no-one noticed.

These are cheaper and supply spares and replacements: http://www.poplargreg.com
Not used them, so no connections, etc.
Interesting to see from this site that in 1974 (when my car was first registered) a year's VED was £25. Using an online money value calculator this would be worth £227.30 according to the RPI.Last edited by DJT; 17 July 2014, 14:06.Dave
