    temp and oil gauge

    Hi all

I cant remember if I have asked this question before and am too lazy to search!.

Has anyone fitted a combined water temp and oil pressure gauge, if so how easy is it and where is it connected to engine to gain readings, are the fittings required easily available or does the whole thing come as kit . I have located a couple of places where I can get the gauge.

Sorry if I have asked this before but any help will be appreciated

    Thanks

    Hi Mick

My Fathers fitted one and it was straight forward so I understand. I think it was a Smiths one and came with all parts. If you want to have a look at it and discuss with him, please drop me an PM and I will give you his number. He is just round the corner, so just up the road for you

    Cheers

hi mick , easy job . if you buy a kit it may not have the adaptor to connect to cyl head but speedographrichfield supply for about £10.connect in usual way via t piece to oil press switch, then remove temp sender unit from head and fit adaptor and fit cappillary device route pipe along top of bulkhead under bonnet lock and coil any excess .do not make it a tight run.fill and bleed away you go use original lamp for back light. takes 1hr and 6mins including a cup of tea.cheers steve

Hi Mick, fitted one last week and tried it out at weekend. I got mine from MGBhive as they were the cheapest (about £55+PP) for the pukka Smiths unit. My only comments are:

        1) The water sensor is too long and will need an adaptor which they can supply (£3-50). The adaptor only has 2 flats on it which made it difficult to tighten in the space. I jammed a spark plug socket on it which worked.

        2) The gauge doesn't come with an oil capillary (other more expensive suppliers might include this). I was lucky as already in place. You'll also need an adaptor to connect to engine (T piece if retaining oil switch)

        3) The gauge is chrome trim which clashes with other gauges but looks ok.

4)n It doesn't come with illumination so used existing clock - the lighting is not brilliant and I'll be looking at better bulb.

Running at the weekend I got a much clearer idea of what was happening out there, the weather was high teens, and gauge sat just below the 90's. Putting the heater on made quite a difference, down to mid 80's. The original gauge just showed 1/2 - 3/4 all the time.

You've got a choice of three things.

          (1) Leave it alone.

          (2) Paint it to match the others.

          (3) Or remove the paint from the others, they are chrome underneath.

It looks very pretty as its is tho! Reckon I'll deblack the others.

I think its a very useful tool and pleased I fitted it. I may use one of the transfer housing tappings to insert a temperature switch (like a rad fan switch) to sound a buzzer if the temperature goes ballistic as the gauge is not as easy to see as the normal L/N/ohmygod I usually have an eye glued to.

Maybe a 4th option. Swap the black/chrome ring from the original temp gauge over to the combined gauge. They usually twist off.
