I am a non road tax payer. I deliberately searched for a half decent car that was tax free and eventually found one, they do exist. Older Stag shells are made of better steel, and mine is apparently a Mk 1 1/2 which has some later refinements.

Were I buying a Stag again I would look at any being offered by forum members whom I sort of know. You can gauge how well a car has been restored and maintained by reading that particular members previous posts. My second choice would be from a long standing club member. You will be paying £3-5k less than from a dealer.

Al, it is true that pre 1974 carsused better steel than 1975,6,7models; but how many on the road today have there original panels?. I know that mine might be a 1977 but when restored had new inner and outer sills, new floor on one side, two inner front wings and one outer, and one rear wing. - all that doesn't sound so bad when you say it quickly.

basically what I'm saying is buy the best car you can for your budget, don't thinkI must have a Pre 1973 car becausethere will asaving of185.00 - you can spend more than that replacing the foam on a coupe of seats.

Goes up to £200 next year

Cars registered before 1 March 2001
In many cases the emissions test data is simply not available for cars registered before March 2001, so, the rate of VED can't be linked to CO2 emissions. Yet, there are still discounts to be had for smaller cars. If the engine capacity is 1,549cc or less, you'll pay £120 (up £5 from the 2007/8 rate of £115) compared to £185 (up £5 from the 2007/8 rate of £180) per year if the engine's over 1,549cc.

The March 2008 budget report included the announcement that the rate for smaller engined cars will be frozen at £120 per year for 2009/10. The annual rate for cars registered before March 2001 and with an engine size larger than 1,549cc will increase to £200 for 2009/10.

Many thanks to those who have replied i do appreciate that whatever classic you are probably always going to have your hand in your pocket i except that but not because i,m poor or tight i will not give this or any government any more if there is a choice.I have taken on board what has been said and i am quite prepared to buy any year also as i think this will be my last classic i may even consider one with the rover engine.Sorry if that upsets the purists but i cant see what difference it makes to me if i have no intension of selling it if one came along an it was the dogs.I must admit what i would really like to do is to swop that way i think each get the deal they want so that said mines a 71 tr6 signal red with far to much info to go into here .What a smashing forum thanks again Bob

            Bob,

You could buy mine. The bad news is that sadly it's not tax exempt, nor every likely to be I suspect :X. The good news is that it's taxed till Feb '09 .
See http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C56455 for honest description. Can send link to more pictures if you're interested - just send a pm.

Hi Bill, lovely car but alas the wife would never get in it because its green and the last green car i had (merc) i crashed the fact its not tax exempt would not worry me nowi have taken on board whats been written

            many thanks Bob

Wondered what you thought about the 883 - my knowledge of bikes is limited.

I'm not a fan of Harleys, but that is not to say thay are bad bikes these days.

The 883 is perhaps the entry level H-D so ideal for the new rider or at least the new to H-D rider. Not too big or heavy for the shorter rider, maybe a stepping stone to the V-ROD or Roadking? for example.

I can't keep up with all the different H-Ds available now! The whole point is you buy a base then double your spend on the all the extra custom bits!

My mother is the same. we had a major smash in the 60s Green Mk1 Cortina estate mother told she might never walk again (she did) then a green Imp. all cars written off have been green. So she won't let any of us have a green car (I don't think Java counts as green in this context)

No problem - I recognise the importance of keeping the missus eternally happy :?!
As a TR6 owner, have you driven a Stag? The TR6 is a fairly elemental driving experience compared to a Stag, which by comparison feels surprisingly modern. If you enjoy the agricultural characteristics of your TR6, after a while you might find the Stag a bit... dare I blaspheme on this forum.... oh, what the hell....dull .

Bob - "Wash your mouth out" Dull indeed!!!

I've not driven a TR6, understood you have to be a Man's Man to drive them, very heavy and brutish? I have driven most things though from a Spitfire to a Morgan, XJ6 to a DB6 and too many modern cars to mention, the Stag is better suited to modern traffic and I feel more useable?.

Still love the Stag and how can any journey where you don't know whether you'll get back, whether she'll overheat (Wife or the Car 'cos I still haven't fixed the heater valve!) but most of all you can hear that V8 burble - I don't believe anything can touch it whether it be a V8 Rover or an American V8! It's music to my ears and I jsut wish I could record it properly and use it as a ringtone!

Now there's a challenge for someone?

                      Well said Ian,

There is nothing that compares with the sound of the exhaust coming from a Triumph engined Stag V8 when you accelerate away from rest with your foot to the floor.

You should have seen the look on the face of another Classic car owner over here when I pulled away from him the other day. I don't think he thought my car was dull.
The Guy's just imported a Volvo P1800, wears a T-shirt with P1800 emblazened on it, and the ring tone of his mobile phone is the signature tune of "The Saint" TV series.
His P1800 is white like the one Roger Moore drove in the series, and for all I know it could be the original car as this guy is in the Film & Entertainments business.
