N.OS Starter Motor

Hi how can I test starter motor before fitting? Is it possible using 12 volt supply from battery charger? Thanks Doug

Battery charger will only supply a small current, and maybe the motor will move or maybe not. *CAREFUL connection to a car battery should spin it up which is a basic check that its not a complete dud; will not prove its fully functional though.

*but I would not recommend it on grounds of safety unless suitable precautions taken.

Just spinning the starter doesnt prove much as Chris says. Until you get the load on it you can never tell how good it is without some sophisticated test gear. Which is why I had to crawl under my car and change one over when it came time to start the engine for the first time.

If you're brave and have a good one to compare it too, you can compare the "kick" when it sets off going! Like I said you need to be brave, have a strong grip and I didnt tell you that it was OK to try!!

Far safer to put the starter motor on the floor and hold it down with your foot, it also leaves both hands free to man handle the jump leads. I wouldn't attempt to hold the motor in my hand!

I used both my hands to hold the starter to the floor but my mate switched the charger on and off (The charger is set to "start boost")
