    Steering Rack Gaiters... Grease/Oil??

    All,

Just replacing the steering rack gaiters as they are split and won't pass the MOT. When removing them a type of thick oil came out. When replacing these, what should be in there? Grease, oil?

    Cheers

    Jon

    Nothing!

If stuff came out it could be gunk that's got in because they were split. If there is lots of it then it could be a sign that the rack is leaking. Change them, fit them dry and keep checking for oil. Keep a close eye on the power steering fluid level, if you have a leak you will notice the level dropping in the steering reservoir.

The steering gaiters will hold a bit of oil so although its not recommended you may get through the next MOT if its imminent. If there are obvious leaks at the gaiters by MOT time then its up to the tester to advise or fail..
