    Value of Stags

Just coming to the end of my engine refurb, could anyone please advise if this will increase the insurance value of my car, currently insured at £8.5k? I see the value overall seems to have gone up anyway.

I know it's tough to answer without knowing the car - but my instinct is the car, which is in good shape, is now worth couple ks more.

    Thanks

    Giles

Get it valued by the club ins scheme. Details in mag.

Cheers I didn't know the club scheme did that - I'm with them already so that's great.

I don't see why it would - it is expected for the car to be in good running order, and a rebuild only does just that...

I would of thought a car with a rebuilt engine is worth more than one which has not been rebuilt

I think it probably would....I have just had a total engine rebuild on my 20 year old Porsche 993 and it has certainly has without a doubt increased its value by fairly much what I paid for the rebuild and I've have an 'agreed valuation' cover with my insurers, AIB who are pretty good with these type of cars......I'm sure it must be similar for Stags in as much as I would pay that bit extra to buy one with a fresh, professionally rebuilt engine....in fact if anyone has a manual one for sale with a recent professional rebuild then please PM me.....

I agree with you- also prices have gone up! I bought mine 3 years ago for £8k, that was top end then. In the Owners Club mag then of the 6-8 classified ads, only one would be for over £8k. Now regularly 2-3 are over £10k.

I think the value only goes lower if there a problem with the car. A car's condition and value is related to the whole car, mechanical, body, electrics and interior. The insured or agreed value of the car isn't related to the market value. The true value is what some would pay for the car if you were to sell it, which will be far lower than the Club's valuation. The engine re-build if accompanied with the paperwork might make a car easier to sell.

If you pay £3000 for a respray or engine rebuild the value will not automaticly go up by the same amount. Unless the car was value took into account that the car was ropey but then it only increase slightly.

It's a little like the Housing Market.

If you have a house in a road of 100 clones, but yours has Double Glazing etc. and the others don't, you will not break the maximum achievable price for your road, but you have a very good chance of yours selling before any of the others do, and a have better chance of getting your asking price whilst others get haggling and lower bids.

                  Regards

Have they really gone up in value?....maybe a grand or so but not in real terms like so many other classics have in the last couple of years ...like the TR2 / 3 / 4's or the Porsche 356's / 993's / 964's, Healy's, Sunbeams, 50/60's Merc 190SL's....some of these have almost doubled in price in the last couple of years...and dont even look at Ferrari F40 and F50's that have done just that....I dont understand why Stags havent done the same....any ideas?

Out all the Stag produced hasn't the Stag got a higher percentage of cars still on the road. So there's literally 1000's of them. Theres an abundance of spares and specialist out there. You could almost buy the part to make a whole new car.

Could you say than about the Ferrari or Porsche.

As a result they're cheap and hopefully will stay that way. I don't what to start paying higherinsurance, like the Ferrari or Porsche, because the prices have risen.

Yes, although admired for their undoubted good looks and practicality of a genuine 4 seater GT convertible their appeal is stunted by the fear of constant mechanical problems, especially engines. However much we go ..."but there are hundreds, thousands even of Stags which are now reliable" the reaction from the motoring public is "well you would say that".

Some of the other cars you've listed have had various other mechanicle problems during their lives and have overcome the public perception of being problems. Unfortunately the BL customer facing attitude during the 70s wasn't very proactive and customers were not helped as much as they should have been to overcome the failures. Lack of investment in continued engine development meant the problems weren't addressed swiftly (or at all) and as always eventually the message gets through and the buying public stayed away in droves.

On the brighter side at least it's kept the cars affordable, increased public perception and demand is a two edged sword. Soaring car prices is only perceived as a benefit from people inside with their cars as against those outside who would like to buy one but don't have a hope of saving the money. There are TR owners with TR5s who now worry that wherever they park their cars the scrotes are out to get them and relieve them of their 30k-40k investment in a car, or even restricting their usage because they don't want to detract too far from it's condition in case it reduces it's resale value ? Would having the same fears make Stag owners happier ? myself I'd rather have the car affordable and useable as they are, (I'd just like better quality spares).

                              To be part of a rapidly appreciating classic market, two of the elements that make the Art world go around are required;

                              1. Rarity. The Stag does not have this.
                              2. Provenance. Sadly, nothing made by BL will ever have that.

The third, beauty, is similar also. There are many beautiful works of Art that have low or no value because they do not have these first two key ingredients.

What the hell, drive it and enjoy it, not have to hide it away cossetted and unusable whilst worrying about it.

                              Regards
