Purple white wire in engine bay

    Hi all,
Was messing with tightening inlet manifold bolts to stop coolant leak the other day. That seems to have worked, but i had to remove the coil and ballast to gain access to bolts.

Put coil back on, and also fitted a Malpassi fuel line regulator for a flooding carb and started car.

During cranking, my son noticed a spark flash around the coil and ballast area. Stopped car pronto.

Checked all around and the correct compliment of wires was going to coil and ballast, but the tape job included a purple/white wire with the orange/white and grey/white. The purple/white was exposed and obviously live!

Is this the old temp warning light wire that was cut in early times? I can't think it would be any other wire; other purple/white wires run inside the car. That was bloody dangerous wih all petrol fumes around, I must cap it properly. Just thought I'd pass on the warning.

    Hi Tanya.
Scary. Purple is normally fused battery feed and white tracer relaes to interior lights, so your logic is correct. I know the North American cars had additional wiring for oil pressure switch, but I am not able to look at my books for clarification at present.

It would be interesting to hear how the fuel pressure regulator works with the Weber. I had hot starting issues with mine and was going to try Lingen's mod to dump the residual fuel pressure but changed to EFI.

      Hi Tanya,

According to the wiring diagram the wire to the temp warning switch/light was white/purple, that is white with a purple trace. 79 & 80 on this picture

Oops, my title is wrong...should read white/purple. That is: white with a purple trace as in Dave's diagram which is the correct one for my car.

John: Engine seems to run sweeter with the reg in place, but I had some dirt get into the carb so that may have affected the running. Filter looks clean, but I will change it today. Pump on my car puts out 5.5 psi, so it's a worthwhile fix.

        Cheers!
        Tanya

Update: white/purple wire isn't live, so ignition must have discharged to the wire instead.

          Hi Tanya.
5.5psi is high, certainly for Strombergs. Maybe someone could advise min, typical and max pressures for the Weber.
