    Who/where do i contact to get my stags' history please?

    Hi all,
    No doubt I'm not the first to post this and may well not be the last but here goes. Basically I'd like advice on who or where I need to contact to find out as much of my cars history from when it was first built. And if I'm honest I don't really know where to start. My car is LD106 off the line so it's pretty early, but that's really all I know. Neither of the VIN plates in the front of the engine bay or the door frame are there so info is pretty scant. Also it has been sprayed red at some point, but I'd like to know the original colour etc.
    Could someone who has been through this procedure or has the knowledge please point me in the right direction

    This is your first port of call to establish the specification of your Stag when it left the factory

        DVLA. they will print copies of all the documents they have for your car from new,costs a fiver and is reasonably quick too !

                The above ideas are excellent and well worth a try. Another option is to drop Peter Robinson an email in his role as Stag Registrar (per inside front covers of all SOC magazines). What worked best for me was to get the list of all previous owners from DVLA and write politely to every one enclosing a recent photo. The information and stories I got back were mind-blowing! One previous owner rang me again yesterday almost threatening physical harm unless I bring the restored car to see him sometime. He is in Anglesey, I am in Norwich! He sent me a DVD showing my/his Stag circa 1980 being overtaken on the road by a Centaur (http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/centaur.htm). He was on the team building these half-tank, half-LandRovers & they used his Stag on a promo video to show the Centaur could do 60mph on tarmac - amazing!

                Your Stag is LD106, mine is LD112 (to see it at this month's National browse http://youtu.be/kAr4KCSfmx4 ). I am self-appointed Historian for the first 200 Stags and have compiled (in conjunction with Peter Robinson & Dave Jell - SOC Historian) a huge spreadsheet of all known information on those early cars. Sadly the line for LD106 is blank - sorry. When you do get information I am keen to know of it please via chris@liles.co.uk - especially if it is H registered (do not give me your registration number via the Forum since linking it with LD106 is a cloning/security risk). J plates started from 1st Aug 1970 so yours had a chance to be one of the 50'ish cars registered as H. Most owners held back specifically to get a 'new' J plate on their shiny new Stag.

                I can give you one piece of info based on cars near to your Stags Commission number - build date was 9th or 10th June 1970 (Stag was launched 9/6/70). Finally, does the Commission plate show the number as LD106 - O (overdrive) or LD106 BW (Borg Warner i.e. auto)? You say the plate is missing from the door frame - I assume you mean door surround since the Commission plate is/should be on body to the rear of the n/s door surround. If it IS missing, how do you know it is LD 106?

                Enjoy researching your cars background. I know I am biased but I believe early cars like ours with some history are the ones which will appreciate in value faster.

                  Hi Chris,
                  I have LD12128BW. Does that come in one of your early 200 stags? I am waiting for DVLA to come up with the info. as per the V888 and also from the heritage site. I only bought the car this year, the previous owner died some 3 years ago and I bought it off his widow, all his hard work and spend!! was hidden from her but I know he owned it from 1987. I have nothing before that. It has large head restraints and side illuminated lights from and rear, other members are of the opinion it was an export model and has been reimported.
                  If its on your list I would be interested to learn more. Its running on a K plate and was first reg. in 72.

                    The ones Chris is referring to were built in 1970. Yours is a 'Second Sanction' Mk1, built in 1972. Production details here:
