    Got spark,got fuel... Still won't fire !!!!!!

As the title says I have defo got spark and fuel but she just turns over !!!

if i pour a bit of petrol down the carbs it starts up straight away and runs until the fuel burns out !!!

Any ideas what it can be ??

Ive be taken the dash pots out of the carbs and had a look and all seems fine with them both

    thanks

      Fuel pump working?

      Carb needle valves stuck shut?

Since it runs fine with fuel manually added, that must be your starting point.

        Yep choke works

fuel pump is ticking and fuel getting up to carbs

carb needle valves - how do I get to them ? I removed the tops and the pistons and all looks fine but not sure on the needle valves ?.

In your position, I would give the bottoms of the carbys a sharp rap with a screwdriver or (small!) hammer to see if the needle valves will jolt free. Otherwise you will need to remove the carbs as these valves are accessed from the float chambers.

Something still doesn't add up though, are you sure the fuel pump as actually delivering pressure (no more than 3 or so psi is needed)? If you disconnect the fuel line to the carbs after the filter, can you "feel " pressure with a finger tip? Take care where the fuel is spraying though!

You should be able to use the inertia switch to switch the pump on and off while you are working under the bonnet.

            Hi wilf

i will give them a whack and see what happens

the fuel is defo getting up and there is a bit of pressure there enough for me to hold with a finger tip as you say

I'll pop out to it now and try tapping the carbs

            thanks

Just tried whacking the carbs with a little hammer and that hasn't done anything

I think I am gonna get it into Carlow Engineering in Benfleet and the men there work some magic on it

I think that your choke mechanism may be moving physically, but the mixture enrichment may not be functioning.

In other words, what Kevin said in post #2!

Hi Darren, removing the carbs is very easy, just cables and pipes. Lift them off, turn them upside down and with a flat headed screwdriver, under the 6 screws on each flat bowl and gently pull off. You won't need a new gasket. You can see the needles as when you turn them up the right way, the floats will hang down and you see easily if the needles do not drop. If you wish to replace the needles, you simply undo them with a spanner and just reassemble.

Don't go so ending loads of money with Tony, he'll take it no doubts, but you can learn and fix it yourself and you don't need a different carb on there, keep life simple.

Go on, have a go, you know you want to

If you are going to have a go yourself, have a look at some of these short films on Youtube for some inspiration.

Hopefully the link will work, if not just type "Stromberg carburettor" into the search bar.

                        Good luck

                          Darren

I had a similar situation with our GT6 last month. It had been stood for six weeks and would not start. Engine turning over, good spark and fuel. In the end I pulled the plastic plugs out of the bottom of both carbs and let the fuel drain out. Then refitted the plastic plugs and tried to start the car. Success!!!!

I assume the fuel in the carbs had gone off or perhaps draining them dislodged a bit of dirt.

Worth a try on your car.

                          Good luck

I may have a go at taking the carbs off tomorrow not overly confident on doing it though

I've come to the conclusion today that I want to get the car checked over properly and hopefully get an mot on it as well then I will just smoke it about for a bit and see how things go as it will be a weekend car / toy

The buyer who was due to come today didn't turn up and deep down I want to keep it so I'm gonna throw a few £££at it now and stop driving ya all mad lol
