    Diff whine

    Hi all

I've recently purchased a stag and one of the many things I've picked up on from driving it is a whine from the diff over 30mph. It tends to quieten down over 50mph. It is more noticeable under acceleration.
The diff required topping up by roughly half a litre when I first got the car but it doesn't seem to get worryingly hot after a decent run.

I have heard of quill shaft problems but wasn't sure if this 30 -50 mph whine was just a normal "characteristic"!

    Thanks in advance

Sadly they do tend to whine at these speeds when they get worn. When I bought my Stag it came with a whiney 3.45 ratio diff, but the original 3.7 was in the boot so I fitted that.

It whined even louder than the 3.45 so I ended up doing a diff rebuild and it is nearly quiet as in I cant hear it with the soft top fitted, but can with the hard top fitted.

Just had mine rebuilt and covered about 300 miles, runs like a dream - a real pleasure to drive cant wait to get out in it again.
