    Front suspension problem

    Hi all

Returning from Hemsby yesterday my car developed a clatter from the nearside front suspension when going over bumps in the road and driving round roundabouts.

Is there a common thing that goes on the front suspension?

    Thanks

Check the bracket where the anti-roll bar bolts up to the drag link - the bracket has a tendency to fracture

The n/s one on my car snapped. I think Triumph modified the design and reinforced the bracket with a thick washer.

Many years agomy n/ssteering rack mounts snapped ,that rattled as well.

What sort of bush did you have on the end of the Drag Strut? Just curious as I heard Poly bushes can cause this.

            Nick,

I can't see that poly bushes will make things worse. I had one of these break back in 1990, many years before poly bushes came on the scene.

I'm not sure they do, I was just curious as I've heard from a number of sources that they may cause this problem if fitted to the end of the drag strut.

                Standard rubber bush.

                  Thanks for advice everyone.

                  There the standard ones Nick.

Lifting the wheel off the ground and holding it top and bottom and then moving the wheel in and out seems to transmit a noise from the upper part of the suspension that could be a whole lot worse with the suspension under pressure but the suspension seems to be doing its job ok bar this horrid noise.

Upper part, as in top mount? or lower down than that? If it is it's not a big job to remove the strut and take a look.

Could be the damper rod itself chattering in it's own bushes - I've known them to s*ag right out and give radial movement yet still retain some damping, although not normally without some leakage

Nick it definitely seems like the top mount, tried tightening the nut under the rubber grommet acessible from under the bonnet but that was on tight.

How do you remove to renew parts?

Pete unfortunately them struts as in your picture are fine,I had one of them snap on my first stag and that was what I thought had happened this time.I say Unfortuately as i vaguely remember this being a straight forward job to renew.

                        Thanks

To remove there's four bolts holdingthe strutto the front hub, but make sure you don't loose the spacers iffitted to the top front bolt, then it's the 3 nuts holding the strut to the turret.

You'll need a pair of spring compressors to hold the tension of the spring, then undo the top nut (the big one) and the components can be removed. If it's clonking it should be obvious once it's apart.

I did both mine over last winter, nothing serious just a paint and replacement of the gaiter and spring insulators.
