My neighbour imports/restores/sells these, their back garden looks like a VW used car lot! Not that I'm complaining. The money they go for is amazing, but they work hard for it, out at show most weekends in the summer. They also remake loads of parts for them too.
They are useful to know, with a well equipped workshop (3 lifts, spray booth, tyre stuff etc and well as lathes and mills) and always pleased to help with lower value cars - like the Stag!
Cheers,
Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!
I used to live in Gloucester Road, London and worked at Lillie Road. During monetary downturns I would walk instead of taking the underground. Crossing Earls Court Road I used to look at the "For Sale" ads in the local newsagent. Often there would be an ad placement for a VW Camper ('only twice around the world Guv') and the price would be like £1k (1974/76). A few weeks later the price would drop to £800, with further reductions until a sale. Once this happened and on the card said "Free to good home. Flying out tomorrow"). This was in the days when the Aussies went home!
These Camper/MotorHome beasts are, somehow, have held greater value than other vehicles. What is puzzling is that as "everyone" (except me) takes holidays abroad why they would need vehicles such as VW Campers? I guess all those long week-ends?
When I see those old Camper Vans I am always reminded of Woodstock, Flower Power, San Francisco, Free Love, CND, and Hells Angel Bikers wearing VW logo badges on chains round their necks.
Perhaps it is such nostalgia that is the attraction of owning such a vehicle, and why they attract such high prices?
I remember Woodstock very well, and the impact it had on the music scene, but somehow I seem to have missed out on the “Free Love” bit which is a shame. If only I could live my life over again I would get more involved in the things I missed out on the first time.
Perhaps I will buy a model of one of those Camper Vans as a little reminder. I did get up to some things in the 60's and 70's though that I woudn't dream of doing today, but I don't regret doing them one little bit, and I was lucky enough to stay single until I was 31 years old, and only got married in 1974, a relationship that is still going strong today after nearly 41 years, a few years longer than the age of my Stag.

Don't worry about missing out on the "free love" bit Terry nothing's free usually means a trip to the clinic. I am intrigued though about what you got up to in the 60s and 70s though co'mon tell all
Hello,
This is the early model with the split front window. These original "Sambas" sell in Germany for 50 000 Euros. A Messerschmidt "Tiger" as well.
Kind regards,
Dieter.

Ah - Graham - If you really want to know you will have to download an Ebook copy of my Autobiography from Amazon entitled "Escape to Tenerife", or maybe as you are a friend and neighbour I could copy a free version of it onto your Kindle or Ipad or similar device that can read Ebooks providing you have one.
Have just updated the book so that it now covers the period right up to 2014. If you access the Amazon site and search for my book you can read part of it for free anyway under the "read before you buy" facility they offer on Ebooks, but I think it only allows you to read the first few pages (or 1st chapter) I don't know, and that wouldn't take you up to the period you are asking about.
Chapters 10, 11, and 12 cover the late 60's early 70's period where I spent time traveling abroad (mainly to Spain) driving there first in a hired Ford Corsair, then my own little Austin A40, followed by several camping weekends with the "lads" in France, Belgium, and Holland in my Sunbeam Rapier. The 70's period covers my experiences with 1st a new Mk3 then a Mk4 Triumph Spitfire, but I won't tell you what car came next - you will have to read the book.
When I see those old Camper Vans I am always reminded of Woodstock, Flower Power, San Francisco, Free Love, CND, and Hells Angel Bikers wearing VW logo badges on chains round their necks.
