Tighten them all back up again, If you are removing the heads the studs are the first thing to undo by running the engine and getting it HOT then remove clean and replace one by one by using the two nut method, why replace them because you may have to restart the engine if it cools before you removed all the studs. Some good info here: http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...r-Head-Removal

I have just made a head removal tool in line with the drawings supplied by Drew. Ready for when I need to take the plunge and rip the heads off my Stag. That is if the method described by Graham doesn't work. So far I've managed to remove/replace 3 studs on the RH head and snap the centre one off. The rear one won't shift - yet! Haven't progressed any further as I'm still using the car......

I have a couple of bits of angle iron that bolt onto inlet manifold bolts and used a bottle jack as well as head removal tool (Paul FirePro had made)to shift a very stubborn head.
heads now in with the welder for major work around the waterways he is charging £80 per head to weld. Then I will take them for skimming at £60 per head not a bad price will post some pictures as and when.
I did also give Andy moss a couple of the same angle iron to make up some.
        cheers Glenn

          Hi Glenn,

Yes, Andy said you'd given him some angle. I had some 12mm plate lying around so made the bits and took them down to Plymouth today to fit to a spare head and get them welded together. I'm sure it will get used sometime soon.

The five bolts on the head have already been tightened back up only undid them to see if i could shift them. Why have the engine hot when trying to undo the studs? as most engines are taken apart on the bench. jonathon

The aluminium heads expand helping the studs to realise

Yes thought it may be something to do with the two different metals.

Also having a problem removing the exhaust from the manifolds, usual thing rusted up. But i have solved it like this, sounds a little odd and it's not April 1st. Mollasses the type you feed horse's disolve rust!!.So off to my local feed supplier, buy a small bag put, some into a feezer type bage and wrap tightly around exhaust manifold nuts, leave for a week or longer rust is disolved nuts undo no problem!!. Try it you know it makes sense!!. Jonathon

Also this method works great for any rusted up parts you can take off the car, but don't use on alluminuim else you won't have very much left!!.

                            Hi Jonathon,

Yes, I read about that in Practical Classics, will definitely give it a try on some bits to see how well it actually works. Let us know how you get on with your exhaust manifold nuts!

                            Cheers,
                            Joakim

The one side has been in it for over a week and the nuts came off easy, result!! now the other side is being done. I am also trying to figure out how to get some around the head studs, but a bit more difficult to do. Jonathon
