Just got my stag through mot. First one since 1989 as the car was stored and I have almost completed a refettle ( just bits of trim etc to fit). My question is, what do I have to do to get the free Road tax? The car is registered in my name, it is insured, and it now has the mot. It was registered in September 1972 so no problems with the January 1974 date. There doesn't seem to be a link on DVLA site which I can see. When I do look on that site it's giving me the cost is. 6 and 12 months. Thank you. Gwyn.

sure someone will confirm, but I think you can go to Post Office that does tax, change taxation class to Historic. There is a section for the change on the V5 itself, amend and sign. You will need V5 which will prove date of first registration, plus MOT and Insurance, then complete tax application form based on historic and they should issue disc. V5 will be sent away to be changed to historic and returned later.
Problem is, as I understand it, some Post offices are good and can/will do it, others don't appear au fait with it and you may struggle. I personally did mine direct with DVLA pre the April date, but they then had to wait until April 1 before they would accept the application! Worked in the end though.

Thanks Ian. I have just done what you said and it worked a treat. Lady in my local post office (Hucknall) was very helpful . All sorted in 2 mins. Andrew, thanks for comments. Taken me 11 months to the day to transform it from a rat invested tip to what you see now and yes I love the colour. Regards. GwynLast edited by scraggs; 5 September 2014, 10:45.
