    Come on then;

It strikes me as 'intriguing' as to just how many owners bought their Stag - only to have it, apparently, "blow-up" shortly afterward.

    Mine did.

Either we're all dumb or there are an awful lot of "spivs" out there.

    Let's hear it.

Mine "blew up" shortly after I bought it because I'd been messing about with it.
I'd nearly forgotten about it and don't want to talk about now!

To be fair to the previous owners my problems were due to a crap water pump fitted 15 years but only 15,000 miles earlier.

I love the Stag water pump, tick, tick, tick.....BOOM!

Mine did, blew the head gasket, full of K-seal. 16 days to get one bolt out!, 56days to complete and £668 in parts and machining.

Mine did too. The radiator bottom hose split on the journey home from collecting it, it overheated before I noticed and that was that. First introduction to Stag ownership was HGF. The PO barely used the car so a 50 mile journey was enough to find the perished hose.

                Not suffered engine failure but:

My first Stag, bought through a used car dealer, had a dodgy MOT. Brakes were crap - rear cylinders seized/leaking, metal pipes rusted - illegally repaired front tyres, and lots of rust.

Current Stag had hardly been used by the PO. The under bonnet fuel pipes were brittle clear plastic and snapped when I changed them, and the rear brake cylinders failed on the first trip which happened to be Prescott Hill Climb!!!

Well, so far, (touching wood as I type) Buttercup hasn't disgraced herself to that great an extent, but I have spent a fair few bob upgrading and renovating most things other than the core engine and gearbox.

Touching wood again, and very firmly, she seems to be running very sweetly just now, let's hope that wasn't famous last words.

(no, not THAT kind of wood, Graham! )

I'll go with Wilf, and touch non stick-on wood. Bought mine from a dealer and other than dodgy clutch, dodgy overdrive (shock from gear lever if I happened to be holding wheel spokes!) and a diff whine, it's never stranded me or been towed home.
Engine and gearbox are about the only bits not been replaced though, all brakes, diff and driveshafts, steering and suspension been renewed. Also had masses of bodywork done to replace the "never been welded" (NO - but full of filler!) and (not) bare metal respray.

Dave - Only time "nearly" got stuck was also at Prescott, when she decided to drop onto 6/7 cylinders, could not sort on site but made it home, replaced leads and dizzy cap etc. and went to ESM in Cologne the following weekend. No problems.

                    Hope I haven't tempted fate........
