Can steering rack be moved slightly?

Under hard acceleration my steering gets a little stiffer, had a look and could see that the torque twisting the engine pushes the tubular exhaust manifold against the steering rod.

Anyway I can slide the steering rack over to the starboard side at all?, or can the cross member holding the rack be slid over like wise?

I also have another odd issue, though I have no play on the rack felt at the steering wheel, sometimes the steering wheel is no longer centered when traveling in a straight line along a flat road?

Pete i had this, loosen rack mount bolts start engine tben turn steering til gap is largest at manifold and shaft.tighten mounts and job done.after this though i had my tracking done as had fitted new rack and brilliant now.

Which way do I turn the steering?
should the car be jacked up to do this?

I started in the straight ahead position wheels off ground so as I could get to bolts then turned to get the best gap, then tighten easy job .

There are two steering shafts available , there's a slimmer type or a thicker type ! If you have the thicker type ,may be beneficial to your cause to fit the thinner type ! Regards Graham
