Engine number will identify the block, but bolt on parts such as heads and inlet manifolds could have been changed so you could have a mixture of parts as some do.
Well, trying not to start a rebellion - but I deliberately bought one with a RV8 - and am finding apart from never overheating, the very few spare parts I have needed - invariably ancillaries - are so cheap and readily available simply because they have been used on so many other motors - TVR, Morgan, Land Rover and Freelanders etc. Never had any problems getting spares from a multitude of cheap sources. (Now I'll duck and run).

Halfords wipers, Turtle wax and shampoo - RV8 and a beautiful Rover 75 ("relax it's a Rover")
I went out of my way to buy a TV8. I love the RV8 in my range rover though. Had one in my p6 also, peach of an engine that puts up with serious abuse before failure.
My first range rover slipped a liner. They do that donchano! i k sealed it and carried on, it failed again so i removed the heads, skimmed them, this is when i found the slipped liner doh. Bolted it back together and ran it. Did nearly 40k miles on k seal with it like that. Then it popped the cooling system under excess pressure, dumped all the coolant but by the time i got to the hard shoulder it had seized. After it cooled the damn thing started again. Sounded like **** but it started and ran, probably on 5 though. That car was a nail though so i bought another, that has done just under 100k mainly on lpg under my ownership. No issues at all.
Efi bits are beer money, that would be the first thing i would do with a rover engined stag hotwire system is so simple to work with.
Sound wise, different noises but only the tv8 makes the hairs on my neck stand up when pressing on. As nice as the rv8 sounds it is no match for me
Btw freelander with rv8 would be some machine but they never made one

Stags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loony
No idea if the Engine in my MK1 Stag is Original or Not. I'll know more when it comes out. Even if the Engine Number matches the Log Book it's NO proof it's the Original Engine.
