    petrol pump

Has anyone fitted an electric petrol pump (I know there all electric but I mean the ones without the points)? My pump let me down at the weekend whilst overtaking a Range Rover SCARY. I have fixed it now it was the points, they where badly burnt .The pump on the car is only one year old and I would have thought the points should last longer than that I was wondering if the electronic pump would last longer and are they maintenance free.

Burlen sell electronic "points" for around £40 and a new pump with electronics for around £60, bit of a no brainer. The pump still ticks.

      Hi John,

In 21 years of Stag ownership all my Stags have had the original 'points' pump and only once have I had to renew said points. Because of this, I consider the 'points pump' maintenance-free and I agree that your points should have lasted more than1 year.

Therefore I would say you were VERY unlucky, and it possibly points (!) to a bad job done by the manufacturer/reconditioner. Is there any indication why they were badly burnt? Is the pump drawing too much current, for whatever reason?(kinks in the pipes?). If it is, then your pointless pump could end up kn*ckered too. Are the points themselves made from the wrong material or incorrectly adjusted?

If you are confident about your fix then you might have thousands of miles of trouble-free motoring aheadof you.

        HI ray

That sums it up exactly I no longer have confidence in the pump

I'm tentatively considering fitting a facet red top pump.

There have been fuel delivery issues for many stag owners over the years.

I had a wild goose chase trying to locate a delivery problem.....turned out it was corrosion inside the inertia switch which seems to be an increasingly common fault these days....probably to to with the 30+years age of most of our cars now.

One other cause is the proximity of the steel fuel pipe to the L.H. exhaust silencer.

The silencer should have a heat shield fitted but many silencers do not have this fitted any more.

The temperature at which fuel boils has also lowered over the years, whichincreases the stag hot start problems and fuel vapour locks.

I have heard that the Facet pumps make a lot of noise, as they run continuously and have been swapped back to Lucas for this reason.

No doubt someone with 1st hand experience will be along soon.

            John.

3mins quick enough? I fitted a Facet due to fuel problems some years back, you will probably need to fit a pressure regulator as well. Took it off after 2 weeks as the noise was continuous and it echos in the boot even after lagging it. Refitted the original and all well since.

My next door neighbour has a V8 P5 coupe.

The mechanical lift pump struggled to deliver enough fuel.

I fitted a new pump and even increased the stroke still not good enough supply.

Then he bought a facet pump which I installed in the boot. This was done about 5 years ago.

The noise is an issue but with the kit he got some rubber mounts whichreduced the amount that got through into the car.

Idid not fit a separatepressure regulatorand that did not cause any issues yet.

The Facet pumps can be used, but as has already been said you will need to mount it on rubber mounts (oftensupplied with pumpor can be ordered extra).

Beware though, there are several types of Facet pump, and some (eg the red tops) have too much pressure for the carbs (even the Holley carbs dont like more than 6 or 7 lbs). Either choose a lower pressure type or use an adjustableregulator (Holley, Filter Kingetc).

Apart from Facets, the Holley or Carter pumps are also good. They do rotary action pumps (not ticking/reciprocating type) which are moderate pressure, and the fuel delivery rate will cope with anything you will normally find under a Stag bonnet (even a tuned Rover 5.0!).

I have an electric pump fitted, not sure what brand off the top of my head. Mine is very noisy. Not constant noise, it just "ticks" quite a lot. You cant hear it from the front unless you are idleling and rev the engine, but it is a little irritating!

                          cheers steve

With all this talk about fuel pumps, my Stag has come out in sympathy! It has developed a strange problem that sounds and feels as if it is fuel starvation. Only happens when starting on a slight uphill section after taking a roundabout or junction. Had this just after I bought the car, but it disappeared when I overhauled the carbs. It has nowcome back.

Took the SU fuel pump out today and cleaned the points. Put it back and it pumped away merrily until the system pressurised. Went for a test and thefault was still there. Swapped the pump out for the used-but-good spare that has resided in a drawer for many years. Same result. The tank is half-full of petrol. The fuel filter was new 3 months (1500 miles) ago and seems clear.

If it was something in the tank obstructing the pickup tube, I would expect the fault to appear a hundred yards or so into an uphill rise, not immediately. If I feather the throttle the car keeps going and eventually 'clears its throat'. If I floor the throttle it just dies off, but does not cut out. If I pull over the engine continues to tick-over.

Cruising on the level at 50-60 - no problem.

I have checked, and cleaned, the fuel pump cut-off switch. It was infairly good condition and cleaning it has made no difference.

                            :?:?:?
