    4 Speed zf gearbox

    Hi Everyone,

Just thinking is it worth changing my 3 speed auto to a 4 speed, if so is this a straight forward swap, and where could i source a good one from.

    Regards Paul.

you can go for the zf gear box kit at £ 2500 plus fitting , or do it your self but theres a lot of work to do, including getting parts made and machined, i know as im going that route at the moment

    good luck dave

A search will show how much work it is and how many parts have to be made/adapted etc. Even at an advanced level, it could not be described as easy to make everything yourself. The kit would be a very sensible option, it depends how the cost of it fits in with you. One thing for sure, it is not simply a question of buying a gearbox, that's only 10% of it.

I spent a long time researching and gathering all the info.I could find, and that speeded things up for me. It still took two months of my spare time but most of that was in making the parts - the car was only off the road for 3 days inbetween running the day job. If I hadn't had all the info. provided by others here, Les M. for instance (grateful thanks to all for that) I'd still have done it, but I'd have left it until Winter and it would have taken a hell of a lot longer.

          Good Luck

          Steve

My car is booked in on October 6th for this swapover, check diff and do seals and put in strengthend extension, half-shafts and while they're there, may as well do bushes, springs and shocks. I'm getting nervous.....

Got the box and drive shafts kit from Monarchs.

                Tanya,

That's quite a lot in one go, but you will have a much different (read improved) car at the end of it. It is all worth it. For me the novelty of seeing the rev/s drop when the OD comes in has not worn off yet, and I know I still have oil in my diff. too!

                Pitzey,

Don't be put off by me, just know your goal and what it takes to get you there. When you do, it will all be worth it.

                Regards

I'd love to do this conversion but the cost is prohibitive! has any other conversion been done with less machining etc? I'm guessing not as this is the most popular conversion..

                      Hi Steve,
Yes, tons of money, but the parts are all bought, so it's just (just?) labour costs now. I hope it all goes well; the boss of the transmission place is doing the job himself (he comes highly recommended locally) and the director of the Canadian chapter of the SOC-USA is on phone standby as he has done the conversions. I hope I haven't forgotten any parts because of the 2 week delivery times and seems like snow is getting close; temps are dropping. If it does snow and stay, the job will be cancelled until May next year, or I will have to trailer the car in, and I'm not keen to trailer.

I've seen an overdrive mated to a BW35 autobox, no lock up but it gives the extra ratio when in 3rd (wasn't on a Stag) - always thought this would be a more cost effective option but can find no instructions on the web. Clearly the ZFHP22 offers a lot more benefit, so you get what you pay for.

Here's some interesting Volvo info on swapping a BW35 for an AW70 which has a 4th overdriven ratio as standard

                          http://www.v1800reg.org/pages/AW70%20CONV.PDF

and which Volvos to source them from

Food for thought but might end being as much effort as the ZFHP22 but for a lesser outcome.

                            Hello everybody,

I'm trying to fit a 3.9 efi rover v8 with a zf4hp22 autobox into a Stag. The gearbox is Jaguar and I have cut the Jag mount off to create room but am wondering whether the unit might be a bit too long. I thought the bellhousing length of 8" was a bit too long (when compared to the 6" Jag one) and that was why the whole unit looked too long at a previous fitting. I was told by Dave Ashcroft that the bell housing for a Rover is 8" long and there are no Rover alternatives. Does anyone know if the 3.9/hp22 unit will fit straight in? Sorry to be a nuisance but I have currently hit a brick wall on this one.

                            Cheers

                            Ralph

Ive got a Rover/sherpa ZF box for my 2000. (fitted with RV8) Its not fitted, but i had it on the bench next to my 4 speed from the Stag, and its a LOT longer! I reckon it will go, but without trying cant be sure. Might have to "interfere" with the box section over the prop to get it in.
