    Engine overhaul plan

I'm planning to remove myengine soon to sort out a few issues with it such as why it's consuming so much oil - about a litre every 100 miles.

I want to keep the car going so I've lined up a Rover V8 to temporarily replace it, but I don't think the Stag gearbox is going to fit it directly.

Does anyone know ifthere's another gearbox that I can source that will connect to the Rover engine and fit in the Stag?

    Thanks, Mike.

    Mike.

Have I understood this correctly? you have a Stag engine which you want to replace with a Rover V8 and then change back to the Stag engine?

If so, I understand that swapping Stag to Rover is a major job, engine mounts, cooling pipes, exhaust, as well as gearbox issues that you have found. Also the Rover is much lighter so front spring rates need to be changed. Then you have to reverse all mods. You may spend as much time getting the Rover to fit as you would sorting your engine.

An easier option may be to get a known running Stag engine to bide you over.

Sorry cannot answer the original gearbox question.

    John.

John, this is all useful information I thought the Rover engine would virtually just drop in, thanks for letting me know it's not as simple as that. This is the reason why I'm researching it before I start.

I have the option of getting the (good) Rover engine from a friend for next to nothing, so that's why I was going to use it, but if it is a major job I may need to reconsider.

      Cheers,

      Mike.

Blimey Mike, you must really want to keep it on the road! But, boy you will take ona bundle to do this!

As has been said the engines lighter so suspension height is wrong for a start, so you need shorter springs BUT you also need a lower poundage spring because of lighter weight. Also are you going to lower the crossmember so you dont put a bulge in the bonnet? if so you will have to reengineer the steering geometry to avoid bump steer. As one whohas gone through these subtelties believe me its in depth stuff.

And it goes on and on and on. If you want to Improve your car by going rover then do it properly, Other wise .......................be cheaper to get a bycycle while your stags off the road.

          mike,

this is not a small undertaking, putting the Buick engine in will invovle so much work that i doubt you will ever change back.

hissing Sid- it all depends on what bike you buy, i was looking at some frames last weekend that cost more than my stags worth:shock:

            Mike ,

The usual box to use is the LT77 but you will need about £300 worth of adaptions to the selector.Bellhousing to mate themwill be about another £80.Also it has to be an SD1 sump and not p6 or landrover/rangerover.

            John ,

you forgot a new prop shaft ,that's another £150-200 ish

Thanks for all the replies, I had thought it was quite an easy swap as it appears so many people have done it, it appears this is not the case.

When I say temporary, I was going to see how it performed with the Rover engine (quite well by all accounts) and maybe even stick with it, but overhaul the Triumph engine anyway.

I'm going to think long and hard about this but I haven't discounted the idea yet so please keep the advice coming.

              Thanks, Mike.

Thats Criminal! Pardon my ignorance but what makes a bike worth that much? just curious

weight, strength, comfort while riding, rigidity, this is my new toy ,comes in at 998grms inc fork and cost retail £1950, with the groupset, wheels, saddle, bars ect will finish up weighing around 15lb and beingcosting around £4300, this is by no means the most expensive, I could spec you a bike for 8k without too much hassle.

good job i am in the trade!!

                        Hi Mike

I have 1 stag with the Triumph engine and 1 with the rover v8,

I am selling the rover engine and will have all the bits to fit your rover engine in your car like the gearbox and driveshaft the spacers to lower the steering rack the softer and shorter struts as the rover motor is alot lighter, holley carb andmanifold to save adding a lump in the bonnet and exhaust manifolds. But you will have to modify your electrics and water pipes.

It does seem alot of work to keep the car on the road but if you are interested e-mail me.
