    Clutch/gearbox problems, advice please

Hi all, apologies for the length of this post

.My clutch judders when hot when pulling away in 1st gear and has done for several years. I want to get this sorted but cannot do it myself. I have spoken to 2 stag specialists.

1 will not supply and fit a clutch, but will fit a clutch supplied by me , without any warranty for 8hrs labour. Alternatively he will supply and fit a modified clutch system for approx. £800 plus vat and 12hrs labour. He also stated that fitting the “heavy duty release bearing” produces a very heavy clutch pedal

The other will supply and fit a modified clutch which I believe uses a roller bearing for approx. £1000 inc VAT all done. Again there is no warranty but he claims reasonable success with this system.

In addition the gearbox is noisy in 3rd and difficult to change from 1st to 2nd when cold and I want this sorted at the same time. Is it better just to get a recon gearbox or have the specialist recon my box?

Thanks in advance for any advice Derek

No warranty at those prices? I would do a bit more phoning around or contact Russ to se what he can offer.

Talk to Paul at Stag Classics in Meadstead near Alton - not too far from sunny Darset and he knows what he is doing and does a good job. Usual caveats apply, no connection etc. apart from being a very satisfied customer.

Does sound like they gearbox needs looking at while the clutch is being done.

A new clutch may not cure the judder problem, I had bad clutch judder with my Stag engine TR which I lived with for years, When I swapped the engine into my Estate it was beyond a joke due to the need to slip the clutch more with a much heavier vehicle when pulling away.

There was nothing wrong with the clutch which I fitted new about 70,000 miles earlier, but the flywheel had lots of surface cracking and two bad burn marks. I had this skimmed at my local engineering works, they had to take 80 thou off the flywheel to remove the worst of it. I reassembled it using the original clutch but IIRC a new thrust bearing as a precaution, and it has been absolutely fine ever since.

Why pay some one to do a job with no warranty..... sounds like the "specialists" are not so confident which makes them less than special in my opinion.

Blimey, I was quoted £350 to swop my gearbox by a Triumph specialist near York, thought it was a good price. Me supplying the replacement gearbox obviously.

Had the same problem of sticking clutch release.solution simple, renew bellhousing clutchshaft bushes, use long snout carrier, drill&tap&fit grease nipple to clutch release bearingcarier at the bottom, then drill hole in the bottom of bellhousing to facillitate a greasegun.Use C/V grease.Ferarri have the same problem with first/second change in their early boxes until the oil warmed up so we are in good company with that problem, especially as the low down torque of the engine allows for first to third changing

Thanks for all the replies, to clarify the "no warranty" statement, both were willing to warranty their work but not the quality of parts or faults arising from them. Russ has agreed to sort it for me at a time to be agreed, once again thanks for the advice, Derek

Hi, I am pleased to say that russ has started work on the car, it turns out the p/o had fitted the drive plate the wrong way round, this has taken most of the heads off the flywheel bolts, the bush had broken up, the pin had snapped on the cross shaft and there was a mixture of metric and imperial bolts forced in. the gearbox needs all new bearings and a couple of baulk rings and the gearbox mounts are damaged/missing. cannot get the pictures across, will try to sort that out, Derek

Good grief - how did that ever work, no matter how badly?

Another one to chalk up to the hands of the PO. I have found a few, too.
