    Tonneau seal fitting images anyone?

Hi, Ive bought a replacement tonneau seal from Paddocks and although I can see that the square section fits into the channel there's a rubber sealing edge that comes from one of the section corners making the seal handed. Does anyone have any pictures of the correct way round that this seal fits?
(Because I bought the project as a rolling restoration I didnt take the car to bits, so don't know how it goes back together - its a good job I like puzzles though!!).

    Thanks

Rob this months Classics monthly might help you out as they have the article on the Stag resto in Australia and they are covering fitting the hood frame this month and also touch on the tonneau cover

You might like to explore the information which the Forum has to offer by using the search and advanced search options. It means that you can access almost anything which has been said on a given subject and you can do it without waiting for someone else to do the search for you

Here's a thread which turns up on the advanced search when typing in "tonneau seals":

Drew, thanks very much for this link. I'm still getting used to how to get the best out of the Forum and although I had searched first before posing my question, I hadn't used the advanced search so ill be sure to use that in the future.
However the seal pictures shown bear no resemblance to the seal listed on the James Paddock website (p/no 622816) so im no futher forward.

I don't think the seals you can get now are the same as the originals. When I rebuild my Stag, I had previously taken it apart and kept everything until I'd finished, so I could see the differences.

I fitted a new seal (glued into the channel) with (I think) the taller part of the seal to the outside, but I'll have to check. I don't think it seals as well as the original, but without a lot of research to find anything better it's probaby all we have at present.

            Cheers,
            Mike.

I'm sure the taller part goes inside allowing the channel to work as a gutter . I tried the paddock new undated rubber but it caught every time I closed so have gone back to the original profile .

We used the Paddocks one (we tried both types), and the Paddocks one worked better after we put a bit of a twist in it where it caught the top by the drainage channels. I need to take some pics to describe this though....

You could, of course, get the seal from Phoenix which comes closest to the original which I found on my car and which others have confirmed was an original fit (albeit perhaps not the only original type!). As mentioned in my analysis, the Paddocks type seal seems to leave no place for water to drain and get to those drain tubes if any water should happen to get underneath the tonneau flange.

I've now fitted the Paddocks seal by just laying it in the channel, seems to be a good fit and when the Tonneau is down looks to be providing a good seal all around the edge. Once the soft top has been fitted I'll see how good a seal it is by aiming a hose, wish me luck!

The thing is Rob that, somewhat oddly, it doesn't really have to seal

Provided that your drain tubes are fitted properly and the metal channel is not corroded through anywhere (guess why I mention that ) then any water that gets into the channel will drain away through the drain tubes.

In fact, as I mentioned in one of the earlier referenced threads, I can't see the point of the seal as it just restricts the free movement of the water into the drain tubes

                      Good luck anyway.

                      Cheers

But, Julian, doesn't it stop water being blown right through into the soft-top and rear seat area?

I shall have to go and look at mine to see how I fitted it!

                        Cheers,

The seal must be there to prevent water ingress into the interior and direct any runoff into the channel and on into the drain tubes. So as long as the seal between the soft top and tonneau is good, water will not ingress into the seat rear area (thats my theory anyway!).

                            Hi Mike,

Are you planning on driving at 50 mph in reverse then ? Only kidding and you could well be right, but it's always seemed to me to be odd to have a seal blocking a drainage channel.

When either the hard top or soft top are on, the channel is pretty well covered and I just can't see how much water would get in there. If it did then it should escape via the drain tubes.

For a while I used a seal that clipped onto the inner lip but then just laid over the top of the channel and was trapped in place by the tonneau cover. It looked good, prevented water getting in and, any water that did get in could flow away uninterrupted however I could never get it to stay in place properly unfortunately .

                            Cheers

                            Julian
