    Recurring Probelm

    Hello

Can anyone help with a recurring problem, the idling speed is sticking at about 1000 to 1200 rpm, a blip of the throttle sometimes drops it down to about 800. However, the next time I come to a stop the idle speed is back to about 1000-1200. Does anyone have any ideas how to cure this and advise what the correct tick over rpm should be? PS it’s a manual. Thanks in advance for any advice

Possibly air leaks but have known it to be the throttle cable that slightly sticks. So when you blip the throttle it defeats the friction allowing the carb springs to return fully.

    Worth a look!

[align=left]Mine's been like that for years when starting from cold, once started I push the choke in a bit then blip the throttle and she ticks over normally.

My choke cam was sticking for a while causing a similar problem. I added an extra return spring and that sorted it.

I've had a frayed throttle cable cause this before. My manual Stag idles at around 650 - 700 rpm.
Drive a Stag every day... it's wonderful!

I have a similar problem with my tickover

I have tried to adjust the tick over with all cables and rods disconnected as described in the manualbut wheni back off the tick over screwsthey lose contact with the spindles but there is no difference in tick over speed (stays at a steady 1000rpm), all components move freely with no obstructions

            Any ideas?

            Cheers

could be a worn throttle spindle which would do 2 things ,add friction and let air in which raises the idle.Had this on my Vitesse.

              Cheers Steve

Did some stags get fitted with the poppet valves in the butterflys? I do not know but have come across them in Strombergs and SUs on Rover V8s of the same vintage.

If so the springs get weak and can cause this. It is easy to just solder them shut.

Check you choke cables are fully releasing, had me foxed with the same problem for ages!

                      Air leak?
Would i be right in thinkingan air leak would have to be engine side of the butterfly

as stagdad said it is probably the actual butterfly spindles or bushes that are worn so carbs may need overhaul ...kits are available if it is something you would be comfortable doing at home. years back idone it reamed bores and fitted oversize spindles then rebiult ,,they were like new worth doing ... lots of companys doing this worth shopping around.good luck. steve with a holley

My idle was sat at a steady 1300-1500rpm for ages. In my case, it was an over-tight boot on one of the throttle linkages (the things that look like a little plastic boxing glove - since replaced with metal ones).

That, and a hole almost an inch across in one of the carb diaphragms probably wasn't helping. I'm no expert, but it must've been at least slightly related!

Hi Gareth I had the same problem which I cured be fitting a light spring between the horizontal part of the bracket which acts as a stop for the outer cable of the throttle cable and the top ball joint on the operating rod . At a later stage when setting up the throttle linkage I found thatthe rod which operates the rhs carb was slightly too long and was holding the lhs carb butterfly slightly open . If I let the throttle snap shut it overcame the problem . However having readjusted the linkage I still left the extra spring in place and have no problems since.

She stag does have poppet valves in the throttle butterflys which I belive was done for the American market. A lot of people solder them shut as this improves engine braking when driving in anger .If you do it do it neatly beceause if you bodge it you will spoil the gas flow across the butterfly

                            Regards Tony

                              Hi Guys

Thanks for help on my tick over problem, after having a playyesterdaywith the carbs, cleaning them, fitting new gaskets (carb to manifold gasketswere very old and passed it)and fitting a small return spring as sugested by Tony, the staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag as my 2 year old callsit now ticks over nicely at around 750ishrpm.

Once again the forum comes to the resuce!
